Hypomagnesium occur in 30% of alcohol abusers because of the malnutrition and chronic diarrhea. Alcohol fuels renal secretion of magnesium, which is also amplified because of alcoholic and diabetic ketoacidosis, hypophosphatemia and hyperaldosteronism resulting from liver disease.
