Don't you think that it's funny that people only complain about 'big government' when they don't like particular policies?

Some people like guns, and so any hint of gun regulation is labelled 'big government'. But if that same government were ever to rule 'gay marriage' as unconstitutional, or Christianity as the official US religion, .. many of the gun lovers would cheer. As they would if the government lowered their taxes. Hypocrites!
Government, while far from perfect, is necessary, and you can't have everything your way.

Yeah, it's funny -- that was your question, right? "Big government" is a conservative catchphrase, but they DO want government to control things they are opposed to (e.g. abortion, gay marriage).

I have observed that the same folks who don't want to have any government interference seem to want to micromanage every female's reproductive organs.

Another unoriginal untrue post. Glad you are not my neighbor.
Report as
Isn't that the truth? They want to control everything from education to our visits with doctors.
Report as
My post is not original but it is completely true. I have seen the reproductive rights of women be challenged and dismantled bit by bit as this country grows more fearful and conservative.

Those people want government to be involved in some things, not everything.

In what??? That is the problem: "government" has become a nasty word until you accept the fact that no one agrees on what is nasty about it. As long as our two-party system exists (and they have made it almost impossible for a third party to exist) we are going to be stuck with this either/or mentality. I sadly believe the USA is in decline.

I'm sorry, where does your argument come in?
Report as
Are you that daft? Government is as relevant as the people's conception of what it should be. Should it help those who can't help themselves? Should it protect those who have made their own fortunes? (it has obviously been controlled, for the most part, by the latter). God bless the Kennedys, who came from the second group but decided to help the first, MLK, Clinton and Obama. The financial crisis you people whine about is of YOUR making.

Only those who are socially held back insult people like you just did. I'm 16; any other teenagers you know who are this into politics?

Anyway, I didn't ask you to re-explain. I asked how your point is relevant to my answer.
Report as
@ Marcus. You could use that same answer for both sides. They both want government interference in some things and not others. The two sides just have different ideas of where they want the big nasty government to step in.

You are quite right, The conservatives say that big government is bad while at the same time fighting to keep our defense budget above 600 billion.

Ain't that the truth? And they want to be involved in our MD appointments, how teachers teach and yet -- they say they want limited goverment- so I'm confused

No one has any reason to complain about small government except those that want more government.
Gay marriage is a states rights issue. Each state has their own laws governing marriage. If the Supremes declare it unconstitutional you just have to live with it.
Gun ownership is guaranteed in the 2nd Amendment.
The welfare budget is also at $600 billion. People on welfare do not do much to keep America secure do they?. Why not cut their benefits along with what ever amount you want to cut defense spending?

I believe that we should cut defense spending, trips to Mars, and make people on welfare submit to drug tests as well as having volunteer obligations if they are unable to work so that they are giving back to the people who help support them.
Report as
I believe that we should cut welfare, subsidies to farmers, subsidizing ethanol production and foreign aid to countries that hate us.
Report as
Have you ever heard someone complain about smaller government? I never have. I think we would all love to cut all of these subsidies to farmers, oil, and insurance companies but can we stomach the consequences? I don't know the best way to fix all of this and still keep our businesses competitive in a world economy. Do you?
Report as
If we are cutting all this how about corporate welfare? That needs to go bye bye.
