my austalian shepard rolled over onto a tent stake and it put this deep puncture into his left leg. We took him to the vet and they gave him medicine, but we have to keep him from licking it and it is not supposed to be covered. He figured out how to get the cone off, so how do I keep him from licking it while it isn't covered. Any suggestions?

You should try getting a smaller cone so he can't slip it off.

i suppose you could put something that tastes bad to your dog. sometimes for my dog we use lemon or spicy sauce. REMEMBER: don't put it ON the wound put it around the perimeter of it around 2 inches away. best of luck!

To keep your Australian Sheppard from licking its wound when it is not covered, you need to use Neck Hugs. They are big soft rings made by Wag Tail Farms, which prevent your pet from reaching its wound. They calm animals and relieve anxiety, giving them rest. You can also try using the Elizabethan Collar, which is also effective in preventing this act.

Since you already tried the E-Collar, (Aussies are HUGELY intelligent, aren't they? I miss mine!) and you shouldn't put anything caustic such as hot sauce anywhere even near the wound, all you can really do is stay right with him and redirect his attention whenever he starts to lick at his wound. The best of luck to all of you!
