Why did I get an electric shock when I touched a tree root that was in a fire pit?

the root had been cut that day with a power saw and was wide at one end and very skinny at the end I got the shock from

From your description, it is possible that you got an electric shock because of the flowing current. Even though the root had been cut, there is a chance that the previous current was still flowing or present. You can get someone who knows more about this to check out it out or rather examine.
