Who cares?

It's a completely ridiculous topic. People care more about his and his opponent's religions than their policies.

His mom was an agnostic atheist. Not too sure on him though. He doesn't strike me as particularly religious, despite the fact that he always ends his speeches with "...God bless America". I usually assume that he's just compensating for his lack of overt religiosity that was so obvious (and over the top) with the previous president.

But Jimmy Carters "born again" culture was alright?
Report as
Not at all. Carter started the whole religious president caricature. Practically every president has followed this prototype since (to varying degrees).
Report as
Yes, but he was leftist, so they excuse him.
Report as
They didn't ask about his mom!

@flight745
True, but the religion (or lack thereof) of an individual's parents is usually informative of one's own views.

The President's father was an atheist.

He appears to be agnostic.

The question was referencing his religion, not the religion of the house he grew up in!

Why does it matter? Politics and religion are supposed to be seperate!

Actually it's church and state that are separate. The idea being that there is no officially acknowledged sect.
There is no constitutional prohibition against religious people holding political offices or limiting any religious organization from being involved in the political process.
The religious belief of any office holder is as valid an issue as any other personal information we want to know about them.

Barack Obama is Christian, even John McCain brought that up when other "ignorant and bigoted people" thought he was a Muslim. They think that because his name is "different" or his father was Muslim. Ignorance at its best!

However, he strikes me as someone who has matured enough to understand that religion is really a delusion. Unfortunately, to mention this publicly in the US would be political suicide. How funny, a sane person cannot speak of his own sanity because his insane peers would condemn him for it.

When ask about his religion while running for president, Abraham Lincoln responded that it had nothing to do with the issue at hand and moved on to the next question. The issue was of course was serving as leader of the executive office. A perfect example of your de-evolving political process, they were smarter back then than mainstream Americans are now.

maybe true notof....but the reality is-Religous people want a religous leader of their liking, to me it matters big time. Certain religions do not obey properly the bible, well how much more will they not also obey the constitution?
Report as
You equate a lack or religion to a lack of morality. Most religious people cannot see the goodness in man without religious influence so they conclude that a lack of faith means a lack of morality, conviction.

I actually believe the exact opposite, because the journey to not believing in a deity or purpose is both thoughtful and also extremely difficult. It conveys a sense of character, of self-awareness. And as far as morality, I believe religion actually prohibits a sense of equal morality since it serves to "write off" feelings of guilt and remorse by labeling the act or crusade as "god's will". Rarely have I seen an atheist blow himself up, fly a plane into a building or blow up a Federal Building in Oklahoma.
Report as
actually a true Christian with common sense would also not blow himself up, thats irrelevent .don't get me wrong, I've met lots of people who i consider pretty much good, but Jesus said the only one Good is the One who sent Him, we are sinful ,vain people who without Jesus have no hope. My point being truly without God in our lives obediently, theres really no such thing as morals.
Report as
That's right! The ten commandments!
Report as
I find it doesn't say a lot about religious folks when they state that without religious guidance, they would act immorally. It appears to be a very thin veil of civility, kind of disconcerting don’t you think?

I think this was a logical question. I think it is also a necessity to know if our leaders are of a christian nature because this country was founded on christianity. W are a country that God blesses and I for one would like to keep in Gods good graces. Of course Obama would not tell us while we ae in a war with the middle east as we are now a known Muslim country that he is a muslim because then we would be hypocritical to vote him into office. Instead he decides to tell us hes a christian because thats better than saying that he is a muslim for votes. I am a christian and last time I checked christians were against abortion and gay marriage but Obama is for both of these abominations. I guess anyone can say they are a christian just dont stand up for what christians believe in. Mr. Obama actions do speak louder than words.

Unless it's a legitimate rape, right? Then the body will perform it's own abortion...right? Too bad the body doesn't take care of homosexuals the same way, purging the foetus of a gay person prior to birth. I guess god didn't fine tune the female reproductive system as well as he could. While you are at it, why not pray for him to include a democratic abortion mechanism?

Be honest, did you guys build a time machine and travel here from the 15th century? Because with all this access to information, you are either joking or just really really "special". How you made it so far without destroying yourselves is the only “near” miracle I can believe in. Although with the way things are going in the US, you may just be well on your way.
