You ought to have known the bible better before you care to discuss over it. Please read: "And the Lord was SORRY that He had made man on the earth, and He was GRIEVED in His heart," (Gen. 6:6, NASB). However, it's never too late to learn. Better late, than never!!!
Report as
naah
yes god's wrath is real if you read that hole chapter or even just the verse before that it says "then the lord saw wickedness of men was great, and that every intent of his heart was only evil" (Gen. 6:5,) than goes on to say that of what you said, verse 6...these verses we said are in the story of Noah and I believe you know the story of Noah or maybe you should know this story of the bible better before you said this verse...yes god is a loving and forgiving god...but it says in verse 5 that men’s heart was evil...not everyone will get into heaven...those who do not love him will not, but those who do love him will….you must understand that this story is to indicate that God punishes those who do not love him…nobody but Noah did… those who have and evil heart will not be in heaven
Report as
So, did I not prove that from the bible that your god was SORRY and then REPENTED to have made man, the very thing that you denied in your last to last comment? You simply stated the whole of Gen 6:5-6 that I referred you to, but you couldn't invalidate my claim, could you? And what you did in your last comment is simply an attempt of "circular reasoning".

God and religion is dependent on belief or faith. It is the choice of an individual independent of anything that may or may not be factual.
Science can only be based on peer reviewed objectively verifiable evidence, or it isn't science.
There is no peer reviewed objectively verifiable evidence for god.
Report as
Yeah, I know the basic concepts of each. I don't find a conflict between them. If you do, you are free to pick which one you chose to believe in.
Report as
You said you don't see any need to "separate" the two. I meant to point out the two are completely separate. A person can engage in science and choose to have belief in a religion.
The conflict arises when the religious try to claim scientific proof for their belief,
Report as
I don't recall making any such claim. The fact that you found error with other believers doesn't mean I share their errors, nor do I feel any need to answer for their mistake.
I find it curious how often when I say something about my beliefs, someone points out the error of somebody else who also believes in God, and assumes my thought process also embraces that error.
I am a believer, and logical in my thought process. I have no desire to answer for those who are also believers, but who think and say things that are clearly illogical.
If you care to ask about things I've said I'll gladly explain them. There's nothing I can do to help you with all the confusion you have heard from others.
If it helps you understand, while I am a Christian I am not a Protestant so many of my views are different than what you usually hear. Also, since most people have very wrong ideas about what members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believe, I'm used to people assuming I believe all kinds of illogical things that I don't. I've even had people tell me they know I believe the crazy stuff they heard about, even after patiently explaining our actual beliefs.
Normally I'm more open to general discussions, but it's 3:00am, I can't sleep, and last night I wasted lots of time with someone else here on another question who just kept arguing for the sake of arguing, because attacking believers seems to give him some sort of amusement.

The ones under my answer to,"What is the point of showing empathy?" are noteworthy. You're welcome to join in on the ongoing discussion.
- I'll add that a science isn't something that you need to "believe" in; it is based on observable, measurable, testable, repeatable evidence. Saying,"I believe in science." is like saying,"I believe in the chair I'm sitting in.". The concept of, belief, has no requirement to be based on factual data; it is only the mental assertions of an individual.
God, on the other hand, can only be based on belief or faith.

Well, what do you mean by "science?" The dictionary meaning of science is knowledge. I believe in knowledge, and I believe in God. I use knowledge to believe in God and the Bible. Many things in the fields of astronomy, physics, anthropology, genetics, paleontology, archaeology, geology, and just about every other field of observable science has confirmed the Bible's accuracy over and over again. I believe in God and the Bible, and because of knowledge I can say with the utmost confidence that everything the Bible says, everywhere from the beginning of time to the end, is true.

Hope this helps - Zack

There are lots of athiests in the world. Outside of the southern American bible belt, it is normal to be an athiest and it is assumed that intelligent, educated people don't believe in ghosts and are not held back by the salesmen of god demanding you believe this or that. Do well in school and plan to go to college far, far away, preferable in another English-speaking country and you will find a whole world that embraces freedom of thought and a myriad of ideas quite apart from what gets preached as the truth in the bible belt. There are whole communities in the world where fundamental religious folk are considered nutters. Keep in touch with me. There are lots of athiests on here. We are all good people.

The very concept of "sin" comes from Christianity and then it advocates to uphold its obscurity in a supposedly afterlife. Would you be thankful to a person who cuts you up with a knife ONLY to sell you the bandage from his store? Christian god does the same.
Report as
The concept of sin is older than that, it started as a Jewish concept and probably goes back further than that.

Judaism never taught we are all born into "hereditary sin". Christianity lives and grows on that very concept. No sin, no fall. No fall, no redemption. No redemption, no Christ. No Christ, no Christianity. My point was that.

The 10 C's come from Judaism and to break any of them is a sin.
Report as
The 10 C's came from Egyptian code of laws and the Hindu scriptures, which existed at least 3000 years before Judaism. However, even Jesus permitted to break the Sabbath law, remember.
Report as
The Jewish concepts of god came from Egyptian mythology as well. Amun was the uncreated first cause, where Ra was divinity revealed which parallels many concepts about Jesus. Egyptian mythology was popular in first century Rome and was felt to have gravitas as a foundation and source of the god mythology. Ever wonder why Jews and Christians say "Amen" to end a prayer. Amen is one of the spellings of Amun and it was the obligatory custom in Egypt to end prayers by saying Amun as an appeal to that god.

You KNOW there is no God. How do you KNOW this?

How many decades of searching have you done for God without finding Him. Maybe you haven't searched enough?

You can only KNOW there is no God if you KNOW EVERTHING. If you did know everything then YOU would be God, now wouldn't you.

Maybe you are an Agnostic. You don't think there is a God. You are not sure.

Science is possible precisely because there is a Supreme Being, the Creator, God or (Allah to some). Scientists have faith that the laws of the universe do not keep changing, so they can do controlled experiments over and over; so they can calculate how to send a craft to the moon and back. But 'belief' is not the same as 'trust'. The Bible says that demons believe in God, and tremble. My trust is in God and in Jesus Christ. But I certainly believe in science, enjoy science, as do many other Christians. In fact, many great pioneers in science have believed in a Supreme God. Bacon, Galilei, Pascal, Kepler, Newton, Boyle, Faraday, to name a few.

Kepler wrote, "The chief aim of all investigations of the external world should be to discover the rational order which been imposed on it by God, and which he revealed to us in the language of mathematics."
Newton said, "This most beautiful system of sun, planets and comets could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful being."
Kepler and Newton are giants in the fields on astronomy and physics; laws are named after them. I wonder if there is a connection between the trend of falling math/science scores and lack of interest in engineering in America; and the growth/interest in atheism in recent years??
Report as
Newton abjured this central dogma being taught by the Church: three persons in one Godhead, holy and undivided. He denied the divinity of Yahshua and of the Holy Spirit. Newton wrote to John Locke, who was a kindred spirit in the dangerous area of anti-Trinitarianism, the subject treatises on the "corruptions of Scriptures" (Ref: Isaac Newton by James Gleick). In his letter to John Locke - "Two Notable Corruptions of Scripture" - Newton outlines how "1 John 5:7 and 1 Timothy 3:16 may have been altered. So, the shaky inference from Scripture to the doctrine of the Trinity was based on a shaky foundation".

Newton argued (in a letter to Locke of November 1690) that the earliest Greek and Latin manuscripts lacked passages that supported the Trinity. He showed by means of often convoluted arguments that two central texts invoked in
support of the doctrine of the Trinity (1 John 5:7-8 -- containing the long-disputed Johannine Comma -- and 1 Timothy 3:16) were absent from the earliest manuscripts, but was keen to stress that his analysis was merely an unbiased assessment of the evidence. Where there did seem to be incontrovertible evidence for the authenticity of a 'doubtful' passage, Newton argued that it had been deliberately misinterpreted by certain factions, in the main by the Catholic Church in the fourth century, and that an antitrinitarian reading made more sense. As in his other studies, Newton claimed that the corruption of Scripture had been masterminded by Athanasius and his followers in the middle of the fourth century.
Report as
sorry you went to all that trouble for nothing.
Report as
Did I? Newton doesn't seem too good now since he didn't endorse your main article of faith of trinity, does he? Did you know that both Kepler and Newton were termed, and still are, termed as heretics by the church?
Report as
Your church, not mine. Keep seeking to understand the difference. One can certainly believe in God w/o accepting the Trinity. One can even become a Christian w/o understanding the Trinity. You obviously came to my answer to try to refute my point, which is to say belief in God and science are not mutually exclusive.

No. seeing how vaguely you took Newton as a proof for your belief, while leaving out his other beliefs that disagrees with you -- I couldn't help but give the vital information about Newton that you seemed to have deliberately withheld!!
Report as
haha! You (again) totally missed the point. My belief is based on the Person of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Bible. That is my authority, not Newton, not the Church, not society, not the world, not Satan, not even myself. What or who is your authority on which to base your worldview? The answer will get to the root of our disagreement. It is clear your authority is not the Bible. I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God for salvation. Other beliefs may give peace, even pleasure. Only Christ gives life. Only Christ has demonstrated His right to be my Lord as well as my Savior, by His life, death and resurrection.
Report as
Haha!! But you tried to substantiate your "belief is based on the Person of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Bible" through Newton and Kepler!! What you believe to be "Only Christ gives life" is YOUR belief; that doesn't really make it any TRUER than all other faiths, or, does it? You can believe all you want that bible says Jesus will be to you -- but that doesn't make Jesus the least better than the ancient savages who claimed the same for their stone gods. As for my views on bible, I am firmly convicted that as for the lack of intellectual rigor, one can't ask for any worse than the bible. This collection of imposed books has been the principal persecutor throughout the history of mankind. I would rather welcome hell, if I must, with open arms than to base my worldview on such unintelligible impositions as the bible. And, resurrection -- huh....
Report as
Thanks, it is MY belief and I believe it because Jesus Christ taught it clearly, demonstrated His authority over nature (science), over demons (religious or otherwise), over sickness, and even over death. That is the kind of Person I will gladly follow and endure your pious folly. You just don't "get it". I have never said my belief is TRUE because I believe it. I believe it because it is TRUE. When will you see the difference?? This was a question about what people believe. I answered it. You attacked my belief, sir. You are welcome to believe what you want.
Report as
I didn't attack you, sir. I attacked your misrepresentation of Newton and then presuming the non-Christians/atheists for failing in maths and lacking interest in engineering due to their unbelief! We don't and can't know if Jesus did any of those as you claimed he did! You simply rely on authority, and faith, nothing more. And needless to say, none of those are least credible than the others. You do not believe it because it WAS true, but because you WANT it to be true!! Two are completely contradictory genres. There is no accounting for your such truth-claim as yet advanced by you, anymore than all other religions advanced before us. But, you too, are welcome to believe what you want.
Report as
Then your attack is baseless. To mention scientists who believe in deity is simply to make a logical point that science and belief in deity are not mutually exclusive. you and other atheists falsely try to claim the opposite, which you cannot. Of course you don't care about Jesus; that much has been obvious from your first post. History and science prove Christianity and that is why you are so intent to attack Christians, as they did in the first century. Christianity is accountable and has been for centuries. You, sir, simply do not accept it, which is not a proof against it all. Christianity has done more for the betterment of society, science, and mankind than any other worldview. And it just irks you, doesn't it? The facts are on the side of Christ and Biblical Christianity; so is logic and reason. And it drives you crazy, doesn't it?? And you do attack me when you attack Christ. And you think it gives you some wierd satisfaction, but it doesn't. And Christ told me to pray for you, so I do. That may be why you kick against the Holy Spirit, another evidence for Christ. Oh well, just another day.

Jesus never existed. So called evidence of an actual person who lived includes a lot of retroactive material written long after he supposedly existed and consists mostly of people saying what the Christians believe not what they saw themselves. Even though the Romans kept fairly good records and several authors were active at the time there is no contemporary report of his existence.

He is a mythological resurrection god or sun god in the tradition of many others who also performed miracles as part of the narrative. The theme of a resurrection god is probably the most common one in mythology and is connected to the solar cycle throughout the year. The death and resurrection of these gods are on or around the winter solstice because those are the shortest days with the least amount of sun. The day light sun begins to lengthen measurably for the sun to be born. The spring equinox, when days become longer than nights, is when the suns victory over darkness is celebrated as Easter.

There are many similarities or parallels between Christianity and so called "pagan" ones. Even in the differences a similar style or genre is followed as though religion is a literary category if it's own. Here is a link to a well written essay on the subject of parallels between Christianity and "pagan" religions.

Christianity is the offspring of its pagan parents.

What facts?
I don't think pious or myself, an empathetic atheist, are irked by anything. I'm not irked by the thunder of Thor or the storms of Poseidon either. Christianity is nothing more than a link in the chains of mythology.

For the record of others 'listening' to this strange exchange of comments about whether a person can believe in science and God....and digressed due to the illogical and false claims, I can only shake my head at the most recent comments. It makes no point, for one thing. Primarily because, fyi, those supposed connections between Christianity and mythology were debunked by scholars who take the time to evauate them. I am shocked they are still thrown out. Actually, I am not surprised. It confirms the desperation I see in more atheists.
Report as
They have not been debunked. That is a lie you hope the ignorant will be stupid enough to believe. There is growing evidence that the mythologies of Christianity is just a continuation of what was already there. Influenced by the centuries of politics and societal changes. Here is an essay on the topic where the author is very careful to use properly dated material, etc.

"T.N.D. Mettinger--a senior Swedish scholar, professor at Lund University, and member of the Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities of Stockholm--wrote one of the most recent academic treatments of dying and rising gods in antiquity. He admits in his book 'The Riddle of Resurrection' that the concensus among modern scholars--nearly universal--is that there were no dying and rising gods that preceded Christianity. They all post-dated the first century." from The Case for the Real Jesus, which has 100 references to a multitude of sources. One of those stated in 1956 that such attempts at correlations were "outdated." Yes, just as 21st century science points more toward a Design and Designer, historical research points to the historicity of Jesus and His resurrection. While atheists continue to hold to 19th and early 20th century science and history. It makes it hard to believe anyone can continue to hold to atheism for intellectual reasons in today's age of enlightenment.

I couldn't help but shake my head in utter disbelieve to see how you so falsely asserted that Christianity has done more for the society and for science!! One only needs to know the history of "dark age" to know the irreparable damages that Christianity has done to the society and the savage brutalities it imposed on humanity for the last 2000 years; and look for the fate of the likes of Copernicus, Galileo and Bruno to know in what greater length Christianity has ever tried to choke science. I don't know how any man who has the least knowledge of science and history can so vaguely claim that "History and science PROVE Christianity"; unless the word PROVE has an altogether different meaning in Christianity (or in Christian Dictionary) than that of English language? How many books would you like me to refer against all the attributes you imposed in favor of Jesus? Let me give you just one, read: "The Christ" by John E. Remsburg. Did you come by a book named "The Bible, The Quran And Science" by a former French Christian Scientist named Maurice Bucaille? Can you please read ONLY "The Bible", and the "Science" parts (leaving "The Quran" part) of that book and and then come back may be to tell how scientific the bible was!! By the way, when you say "scholars"; do you mean "Christian perpetrators" hired by the church? Because, that, to many, is nothing more than a criminal seeking acquittal on the SOLE basis of his OWN testimony!! And, pray all you want for me as long as your wishful thinking makes you happy. I just can't see how you can do any better to let me see some fabulous holy spirit through your closed eyes and clasped hands in prayer, that your very god has so miserably failed to do for such long!!

Hello!, appears you are intent on pulling out the whole atheist playbook from those 'unbiased' apostles Harris, Dawkins, and Dangerfield (might as well be). Give you a grain of truth and you make an entire doctrine, throw in false assumptions, some exagerations, some outright lies, and you think you have some kind of case against..........me? against the Church? against Christians? Who or what? For all the admitted faults you can come up with against a minority of believers in a minority of history, you have no case against Jesus Christ. IF you want a list of the 100 references I can give them, scholars who would not risk their reptuation with shoddy research just to be quoted. Your skepticism is quite selective, I will say.

IF you want to consider the TOTAL contribution of Christianity, you will have to be honest with yourself. Hospitals, schools, care of widows, orphans, multiplied over centuries and countries. The contribution of moral values, work ethic, the sciences, law, the arts, etc has been well documented. Christianity's contribution to the USA alone is quite astounding.

Your selective judgment by exception might work on others, but not all who refuse to be intimidated by the fairly recent brand of modern 'radical' atheism.

I find it difficult to reason with the unreasonable position that naturalism is all that exists; when the universe requires a cause of it existence and naturalism rules out such a cause. Naturalism falls flat under the weight of its own presuppositions.

sorry to ruin your fun.

First, let us think about science - there can't be limits for scientific experiments. Each day brings new scientific developments, either, finding, a new theory, Equipment or negating what had been believed so far, and in this way, there's no end to it. so, the end will never come to these experiments - the scientists, call, this, as, the universe, cosmos, milky way,and so on, and, we (even these very same scientists too ) call it simply as GOD. this is like, a simple interchanging of meanings - ie. if the dictionary, given the meaning for GOD, if we take it, for science or vice versa. Finally, the agreement, which is consensual, ie. there can't be an end to these scientific experiments, itself proves the, existence of the Omnipresent/ Omnipotent.
