We've just upped the percentage of the population that are either full psychopaths or qualify as a psychopath that has yet to commit a lethal crime. Apparently there are a lot more of them in general population than we originally estimated. Not all turn out to be killers - some end up on Wall Street and others are in political office or CEO's of mega-corporations. Add to this the usual causes of murder: gang initiations and violence, poverty and economic despair coupled with horrendous home lives, hopelessness, dissolution of families and/or no real family values passed to the next generation, unloved, institutionalized, abandoned and neglected children, and other mental illnesses - especially those that lead to "criminal mentalities" (other than psychopaths), and the ease of committing murder with technology of lethality in the hands of the wrong person - usually in an altered state of distress - at the wrong time. Of course, there are plenty of people that have no problem committing murder for some personal profit - even pre-mediated murder - they may or may not be psychopaths. Violations of severe religious dogma among more militant religions are often attributed to motive for murder. Overall, we are one violent species.

It's likely that it's not really becoming more common, just more reported.

It has always happened. It's just now after a major attack, shootings are "good news" because the news networks want ratings

Perhaps because of the way our society has more and more devalued human lives and become more and more of a "it's all about me" society.

Some of those reasons mentioned above are factors but don't forget that technology has changed. Access to more powerful weapons with larger magazines are available too. The fact is anyone who is determined to commit mass murder can kill a lot of people before they have to reload. They can use laser sights, scopes, night vision, and armor piercing rounds. Fortunately, most people who murder, kill people they know. It's pretty unlikely any of us will be murdered by some random stranger.
