What is the best way to make sure that I don't clip my cat's nails too short.

I can't take her to the vet to get them clipped because my vet charges $30 and my mom doesn't want to pay that much when I can do it at home for free.

If it were my cat, I wouldn't trim her claws at all. By doing that, you limit their ability to scratch itches and clean themselves, then the claws split, fray, and bleed anyway half the time, not to mention that if she's indoor-outdoor, you can kiss her goodbye if she ever comes across a tom. If she's young and you're having a problem with her clawing the furniture, let her outside (if it's safe to), or get her a scratching post or something. With time and punishment (ie yelling and hissing) for clawing furniture, she should grow out of it. Mine did. Even older ones can be trained out of the habit, just as my other one was. Whoever said you can't train cats, obviously didn't try.
If you absolutely have to, I would much prefer to have them rounded than trimmed. Wasn't there some tool advertised on TV a while back the did that, some cheesy name like 'Peticure' or something? Google time. My last resort would be to trim them, and I wouldn't want to risk hurting the poor thing even more by doing it myself. Each cat's claws have to be trimmed to a different length. If worse comes to worst and you have to trim them yourself, be calm, and WEAR LONG SLEEVES. Good luck.

Thanks for the luck I have a 1 year old indoor cat and she likes to jump on people's legs and scratch them that's why I clip her nails and i'm hoping that she will grow out of it she has a lot of energy and i'm thinking about getting another cat so that she'l have a playmate.
