How to socialize a shy cat

I have adopted 2 cats from a shelter. Female one is very social and friendly. The male is so scared of people. I suspect he is Siamese mixed but don't have much information about his background. He is not aggressive but doesn't like to be touched. He gets on well with my other 2 cats. He sleeps under the bed or top of the cupboard all day and never plays with the others. When I walk pass him, he doesn't run away but if I try to touch him, he is nowhere to be seen. Any idea on how can I socialize him? Thanks

Give him time. I adopted 2 shelter cats who were about 6 months old, and one was much wilder and more scared of people than your cat. It took almost 2 months to socialize her.
Speak to him in a soft voice. Let him see you holding and stroking the other cats. If there is some food treat that he really likes, hold some in your hand and wait to see if he comes to eat it. Just be gentle and patient with him, and he should become socialized after a while.

To socialize a shy cat, maintain a calm low voice and make sure to avoid making sudden or loud noises around it. Avoid looking into the cat's eyes and make sure to sit besides the cat's food dish while it is eating. Read more at http://www.ehow.com/how_8222316_shy-cat.html.

Part of what you are describing is his cat personality. Part is shyness. Get a cat toy that can be used interactively by you and the cat. Get on the floor one on one with the cat for some play time. Reward his interaction with a treat, A little piece of chicken or something. Do this without the other cat being around. Cats can have a very I don't need you personality. This may be the case but you can help him along.

Whenever you make eye contact with Shy/Guy, smile with your eyes and respect his space!
