My dogs eyes are SO unbelievably red and bloodshot. What could this be and what should I do?

I have an appointment with our veterinarian already so PLEASE don't tell me to take him to the vet--That's common sense! :-P What I am looking for is suggestions and home remedies in order to treat my dog while we're waiting for the appointment to arrive. I'm extremely curious as to what the issue might be. This happened LITERALLY over night--We went to bed last night and he was just fine but then when we woke this morning his eyes are SO bloodshot. In all honesty, I've never seen eyes as blood red as his are now--In humans nor pets. I'm very intrigued by this! Any help you can provide me with will be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

The blood shot eyes are as a result of inflammation of the cornea, eyelid, sclera, iris or the ciliary body. Other common causes could be orbital disease, glaucoma or hemorrhage at the front of the eye. Read more, www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/eyes/c_multi_red_eye#.UC_CON3iaPY.

depending on the breed of dog he might just be tired or he ate something bad. just let him relax and see if time lets the redness go down

It might be scratched. My dog had the same problem. What could have scratched it could have been anything. A blade of grass could even scratch your dogs eye.
