Through its entire editorial lifetime, the NY Times has had both an editorial policy and a hard news policy that leans left. The "newspaper of record" has had excellent reporting on issues that cover the liberal waterfront, but on issues of interest to conservatives, including both opinion and commentary as well as hard news, esp if it favors a conservative, it is either buried in page 30 or not reported at all. Opinions are 18-1 in favor of a progressive/liberal agenda.
Thats why their magazine is struggling financially. Most people know how they paint conservatives as evil people. Any Republican victory or Liberal shameful act is hidden on pg. 30. Eric Holders Fast and Furious case info is always hidden instead of making the headlines. Those are saved for the Obamas.
Generally the NYT probably prefers Democrats to Republicans, but that makes it center-right, not far left. On health care, the environment, etc., Obama is where center-right politicians are everywhere else in the world.
