How did Virginia all of a sudden have an earthquake and how was I able to feel it here in Hanover PA if it was only 5.8 magnitude

Report as

The plates on the east coast are all one giant plate. So a 5.8 magnitude quake was felt all along the ridge from Mass to SC and GA. The plates in CA are divided so a 5.8 would only be felt in one area.

We aren't very close to another plate but we are on a fault line. Plus 5.8 isn't that small of an earthquake so it was more likely than not that most of the east coast felt it.
