Are people really this stupid?

Why is it that people are too bothered to spell correctly when asking questions and/or giving answers? Do people go to school to be this ignorant?

Idk but it is annoying. They actually have to go out of their way to spell things wrong because of spell check. Doesn't make sense.

Not necessarily stupid. I chalk it up to being lazy. Some people forget they are talking in l33t speak and not English.

I think it is a combination if things, some are lousy spellers, some poor souls were taught writing to read as youngsters, some are text speaking and some ( like me) aren't up in this "newfangled machinery" and when I type something, I forget that the machine will correct it according to what the machine thinks it should be. (autocorrect)

That's called autocorrect? :P Hi, Boo.

It is on an iPad. I typed kuckle's name and it corrected it to knuckle. Smart ass computers!

Getting there. Are you ready for school to start or has it already in your neck of the woods?

Ah! Don't say "woods," you know us kids when it comes to Slender Man...

I just started school today. It's not so bad after all. Haha!
Report as
Ok, educate me... What the heck is a slender man??
Report as
THE Slender Man... There are a bunch of stories about people coming up missing and some people decide it's "The Slender Man's" doing. It's a person who can grow very long tree-limbs and he has no face, and has been living for at least hundreds of years.

Okay, so the spell check on this site does not automatically fix the word, you have to go back and fix it and it's much faster to just click "Submit Answer" than do that. And if the message gets across and answers your question, then I don't see the problem. Also, I think if you should really call it lazy as opposed to ignorant. They just don't want to bother to go back and fix the small error that really doesn't make a difference.

People are too lazy to use spell check or go back and LOOK at how stupid they sound. It's not that they're stupid, they're just so lazy they don't even care!

I'm an English teacher is is not coping very well with the overwhelming evidence of near illiteracy on this site. People write separate ideas into one unpunctuated sentence and leave key words out and then become inflamed when their question is not understood. The importance of grammar, spelling, verb tenses, and sentence structure is a grade four focus. I live in Canada, so our educational system is quite different. It's heartwarming to see that other people are concerned about something that makes me shudder. For those of you who bother to communicate properly in writing -- thank you so much!

Hi, Rathkeale!
Report as
You're in trouble rath. We've decided that proper spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and cursive writing are no longer needed in schools. However, when they get to high school they can take a course called Teen Living. Doesn't THAT make you jump for joy? Lol
Report as
Dear Lord! Is that the course where they learn to say please and thank you?
Report as
You wish (and I wish too) they learn about getting along with the opposite sex, what peer pressure is, blah, blah, blah

I have absolutely no problem with public school, but I do believe the American public school system can do much better.

They can but first teachers need to be able to just teach. Here in NC they have to be the morale boosters, manners police, sex education teachers, babysitters and counselors. It doesn't leave much time for teaching.
Report as
There's too much wrong to start on.
Report as
You should have seen my daughter trying to "spell it like it sounds"... With a southern accent. One of many experiments the state office decreed.
Report as
I'm sorry, I don't understand.
Report as
When my daughter was in 2nd grade the newest way to teach spelling was to tell them to spell it like it sounds. (grand prix becomes grand pre, cat becomes kat, etc)
With a southern accent a simple word like dad gets drawn out so she spelled it dayd... Because that A goes long. It was funny and scary.
Report as
Oh, I see. Hahaha.
Report as
And the lack of education is about soooo much more than spelling and grammar. It's about how to find answers, solve problems and do any kind of critical thinking.
Report as
Critical thinking? Teachers don't have time for that anymore. They have to teach the end of grade test!
Mostly it isn't the teachers that are the problem. It's all the bull the state office deems the latest and greatest.

I hate when people misspell words, especially easy ones on purpose. Add to the fact of using horrible spelling with stupid questions it's insane.
