Drs office told me not to drink alcohol 10 days before having basal skin cancer removed(surgical excision). is this excessive? if true, why?

It is actually true that you should not take alcohol about seven to ten days prior to your surgery. This is because the alcohol may stipulate excessive bleeding, which is dangerous to your healing process and the procedure itself. Smoking has a negative impact too on the healing process and must be stopped a day prior to the surgery and for 1 full week after the surgery. You are hence encouraged to talk to your primary care physician for help with alcohol or smoking cessation.

Do you need a drink so bad, that you think you cant go 10 days without one? If so, you may want to think about joining AA. Meaning if you have to ask if that is excessive, in the first place, you may have a drinking problem.

alcohol is a blood thinner. To prevent excessive and prolong bleeding it would be best to not have it in your system, so to not complicate your surgery.
