Ok, I will tell you how to figure out the solution, it gonna be long but I am hoping you can understand it from me :)
Imagine that there is a point (o) where both live at.
One of them travels 2 km north, draw a vertical line to upward and write beside it 2
One travel 7.5 km west, from the same point (o) draw a horizontal line to the left(west) and write beside it 7.5
Now you are having a right angle triangle but with missing side (hypotenuse), with respect to Pythagoras theorem;
(hypotenuse)^2 = (side 1)^2 + (side 2)^2 <--- From that law you can find the hypotanous which represent in your case the distance bewteen both places.
I hope you got it, please feel free to ask me anything if there was anything unclear.
Good Luck :)

7.762087348 etc. Round it.
It's a triangle with 2 and 7.5 as the legs, so you use the Pythagoras theorem. 2 squared + 7.5 squared is 60.25. The square root of 60.25 is 7.762087348 etc.
