What age female should i buy for a 3 year old male cockatiel?

hello I have a 3 year old male cockatiel. He hisses alot and never likes to leave the cage. He allways been that way after months of attention. Im deciding to get him a female partner. How old should the female bird be? Will it calm him down ? Also how would he react if i put a box in

You should buy a 2 or 3 year old bird as cockatiels, start breeding at 1 year. The bird will be much calmer as they are known to be friendly and you can breed them in colonies or pairs.
