Is becoming a high school English teacher a good job?

I really want to be a high school English teacher and I am working on getting my BA in English. My family does not really think it is a good idea because teachers do not make a lot of money... But it is my dream to start off teaching high school and then move to teaching college students. I want an opinion of an English teacher. Possibly one in California? But also other opinions are welcome :)

Funny, I changed my major because of the grief my father gave me. I love history & wanted to something it that field, be it teach, explore, research etc. My dad kept saying, "what the hell can you do with that major?" So I didn't major in history, wish I had & still may go back to school. Don't let $$$ dictate your life. If you want to teach go for it, you won't get rich but you'll make a good wage considering the amount of time off. Do what you want to do, or be like myself & many others that look back & think dummy what was I thinking

it's a great job with great pay but you have to have a great tolerance with teenagers

Well a job is not good or bad. It depends on you. Whether you love it or not. If i want to do a job i would prefer the one which i love the most no matter what people think. And that's how you can satisfy yourself over achieving a dream. So do what you like...

I want to teach, that is my dream but my family always says I won't make good money and it isn't a good job.

With all respect to your family and to you i would suggest you to do the job you like. If you really don't care how much you are earning. Try to seek a chance from your family over this job and convince them by telling about your dream.

I'm glad to see you have a good spirit. But it's a very dificult job specialy when parents are in deniel but if that what you want to start go for it, I don't know you but i think you will be a great teacher. Good luck !! stay Bless. ?
