You have a spouse, and two children. You just lost your job. You're out at Wal-Mart because you need to pick up a few things before heading home, and out in the parking lot, you find a ladies purse in an empty cart. No-one is around so you go pick it up. You look inside, there's no ID, but amongst all the crap, you find a $100 bill. What do you do?

I believe I would keep it, and I believe given the conditions you laid out in your question, I would NOT feel the least bit guilty about it. If I felt magnanimous enough, I MIGHT turn the purse in to the lost and found at Wal-Mart (sans the $100 bucks though) because there could possibly be an object of sentimental value in the purse or valuable for some other reason to the owner but not to me. I once found a wallet with $1200 in cash and I was given a sufficient guilt trip to return the entire amount to the rightful owner, sometimes I DO curse myself for NOT keeping the cash, especially since I have had lost wallets returned to me, minus the cash. As a rule though, I hardly EVER carry more than $150 in cash in my wallet. (Just for the very reason I might lose it.)

Report as
I agree, I've had my purse actually stolen, and later it was found, with a few things gone, mainly my cash and credit card.
Report as
I don't know how someone could feel ok even taking a mere dollar from someone's wallet.... It's just wrong to me... I know it's wrong to judge, but I have to work really hard not to question humanity when so many people find this ok. I thought I lost my wallet once (forgot to pack it in my purse) and that was one of the most horrifying experience of my life, cause my credit and 300 dollars were in there- was shopping for a dress for a special occasion- can't imagine taking someone's money, again.
Report as
Of all these people who would do the "right thing" by NOT keeping the cash, I would be curious how many of them would leave their actual name and phone number and insurance company information when they leave a "beauty mark" on somebody elses vehicle in that parking lot??? (Assuming they couldn't find the "rightful owner" of damaged vehicle.)
Report as
Again, I am an EXTREMELY flawed person, I snap sometimes, I take my mood on others sometimes, but I would do that. Again, because of how I would feel if the tables were turned. I'd hate someone to do that to me.
Report as
When I was a teenager, driving my moms car, I bumped, and seriously that's all it was, someone else's car, and I knew if I told someone, I would get beat. I didn't tell.
Report as
@cj-yea, that's hard. I think denting someone's car lightly is different then stealing. I can sympathize with that.
Report as
To Shaylen: Like I said in my response, I have lost my wallet on two different occasions that I could remember. One time in particular I noticed the cash was gone when it was returned to me, but my credit cards, drivers license, and all the other valuable "odds-n-ends" were still there. I was more relieved at that, than disappointed my cash was gone. In this day and age unless you're Tony Soprano, it is not really a good idea to be carrying cash around with you unless it is really necessary. I hate to sound hard nosed here, but PERHAPS some may need to learn certain lessons the hard way? One could argue that it is attitudes such as mine. that "encourage" barbaric behavior like not turning in cash that previously didn't belong to us, and one may be right, BUT...I think all but the most hopelessly optimistic knows that human nature being what it is, such "goodness" is never going to take over the entire planet or western civilization any time soon., ,
Report as
What would you do then, if you found a $100 bill laying out in front of a gas station? Would you turn it into the gas station?
Report as
@cj-who is the q directed at?
Report as
@jeb-think I did learn that lesson... When I THOUGHT I lost my wallet. Still though.
Report as
To anybody interested: I mention the hit and run thing because, even though such activity is not stealing, it certainly is going to cost the average driver more than $100 to fix (Assuming the owner of the damaged vehicle notices or cares to get the damaged fixed) I bring it up, so any HONEST "holier-than-thou" types have something to think about before potentially chastizing me or anybody else about keeping the $100 as presented in Cjkenke'ls question.
Report as
@jeb- I'm not trying to be a "holy than Thou" thing, I just think that's a common courtesy and a black and white for right and wrong.
Report as
By the way, I have hit and damaged other peoples vehicles without telling them and I do feel guilty about it, but not enough where I'm going to say to somebody: "Hey, you know that lovely dent and scratch in your right rear 1/4 panel? Well, I just thought you would like to know, that was ME that did that. My name is Jebidiah Crackercorn, and this is my phone number and the number to my insurance company. Sorry for the inconvenience and the raise in blood pressure I caused you." (I have also have had considerable damage to my own vehicles in parking lots and for the life of me, I just can't seem to figure out why I didn't see any note on my windshield. Karma.)
Report as
I DID mess up someone's car once. I was crying and scared of being in trouble, but I called my parents and I had them call the police to get information for the person and stuff.
Report as
Honestly, I'm not trying to be "holy than thou" just treat others as you would like to be treated. If its ok for you to do something do someone, it should be ok for them to do it right back.
I'm a flawed person, but I strongly believe in the golden rule. Sometimes I don't always practice it though, not 100% honest all the time, but wallets and card is a pretty huge wrong to do to someone.
Report as
To Cjkenkel: Regarding your second but similar question about the $100 found at a gas station, I might be even MORE inclined to immediately pocket that UNLESS I saw that someone accidentally dropped it and they know that they dropped it, in which case I probably would return it back to them. With your purse question, I might at least hesitate before pocketing the money.
Report as
That question was directed @ shaylen. Because both circumstances are very similar. If you take the purse into walmart, and no one claims it, they are then going to pocket the money. If you find $100 in the parking lot, are you going to also take that in and say "hey I found this" hopefully the person who lost it claims it??
Report as
If it were like 10 or five dollars, I might take it, 100, I would probably try and find the owner. 100 is a lot of money.

the thing is that most of the people saying they wouldn't take it have never been in that situation, can't supply food for fam, stomach growling etc..
Report as
Exactly. I mean, if there were ID in the purse, I could understand turning it in. But how would this situation be any different than just finding a $100 bill laying on the ground?
Report as
It's different because the purse is an identifiable item of the rightful owner.
Loose cash alone has no way to associate it with an individual.
Report as
Right, but the purse, in which you turn into Wal-Mart, say no-one claims it, is then just going to get thrown away and someone is going to pocket the $100 anyways.
Report as
You can't know that at the time you find it. And you will always know the cash was associated with the individual who had the purse. Thinking the purse will be thrown away and cash pocketed is just a self deleluding fantasy of justification.

I would turn the purse into Walmart's and leave my name and address. What if that purse belonged to some very poor little old lady that would not be able to buy her prescriptions if she didn't have that money. That money wouldn't make me any richer, and my heart would be a lot poorer.

I would go look for the owner, honestly. I'm not a perfect person, and I don't always do the right thing, but no matter my circumstances, no matter how tempting, I could not find it in me to do something like that. That is one thing I know I would not do, and am pleased to say I wouldn't, because I could put myself in that person's shoes: what if the situation were reversed: imagine how devastated I would be. It also certainly would not be a Christian or Christ like thing to do. I would not be able to do that without feeling guilty- God is always watching.

Sorry- I meant to respond, but I fell asleep.
Report as
I might probably, just because of my personality and I just don't have it in me to do that, but not wanting to wrong God by wronging others- is a motive. If it weren't for God, I'd find it so easy to hate my dad because of how he treats me-but because God tells us to love everyone, I try really hard to love him even though he is manipulative and generally quite selfish, and our personalities clash.

This DID happen to me. I went grocery shopping at 7am once and as I pulled into the slot I saw a cart with a purse in it where the baby sits. No one was around. I didn't even think twice. I got the purse and brought it straight in the Wal-Mart. Inside was an hysterical woman older than me saying she lost her purse and no one working there was helping her. She saw me come in with it and she couldn't speak. Then she asked where I found it and I told her. She said there were 2 round trip tickets to London and FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS in it and that's why she wS so hysterical. I said,"Well I'm glad I found it before anyone else did" and went on shopping . She said she had bought some items for her trip and out them in her car but she couldn't find her purse after she out the items in her car. But she had been rattled by the trip and just didn't see I because it was right there in the cart. I never even looked in it before I brought it in. I just knew what was right. She said she had saved for years for that vacation. No she didn't offer a reward. And I wouldn't have taken one. I even forgot about it until this question.

@alva-yes I do know you by now dear. And I was teasing about the price of the wking grlz. I have a funny story about that. The first time I went to Las Vegas with a girlfriend I was 26 years old. It was at a club at the Hilton we went to and we met 2 really rich guys. They asked us if we were working girls and I SAID YES because I had a job as a teacher and I figured that was working. Then my girlfriend explained she went to college and worked at a restaurant. The guys both turned their heads and looked at eachother like we were idiots from Oklahoma.(that's where I live ). Anyway. They asked us if we wanted to dance and we said okay. Then they proceeded to take us out on the town like you wouldn't believe. They had a Penthouse in Cesars Palace...but each time they bought us a meal or took us to play craps, I KEPT SAYING," You aren't expecting me to "DO" anything for this are you?" and mind you, I STILL did not know what working girl meant. I thought it meant you had a job. So we had a great time and the next morning left back for home. He bought me presents for my little boy who was 3 at the time to take home to him. He called me from his home in California for a while and asked me to visit but I wouldn't. YEARS LATER I was watching a movie and found out what working girl meant and I was horrified thinking I had told somebody in Las Vegas that I was. But then I realized that's why they showed us a good time and didn't expect anything, because that would have been a NO FROM ME. but people always find it funny that ai told people I was a working girl because I thought it meant you had a job.

Great question: asked in ethics, philosophy, and even law school classes. It's a test for moral structure and adherence to the social contract between humans. Ideally we'd turn it over to authorities we can trust - and /or post a photo on the lost and found board - wait for a call - ask the caller how much is in the bag to verify it's their's. This answer is considered the answer of highly ethical and people of high moral character - they are capable of empathy with the person that lost the purse and money.

Sincerity: yes. It also happened to me recently and I did the same - I was able to track down the owner. Unfortunately there seems to be something wrong with a lot of us given this hypothetical circumstance - I asked 2 groups of college sophomores almost this exact question - the answers were unanimously disappointing, such as, " if the owner isn't responsible enough to keep their eye on their money - they deserve to lose it and I deserve a reward for finding it - thereby teaching the owner a not easily forgotten lesson". Yeah - that's almost verbatim. Humans can rationalize anything if the "thing" is in their personal interest.

i actually watched someone "steel" money from me.. had left my wallet (like i usually do) laying around in the club/locker area... came out of the Jacuzzi/ice bath and watched someone ponder whether to take the wallet or not. they looked inside.. took some cash (not all) and left the wallet. had he taken the wallet i would have stopped him. was happy to lose the coin (it is only $). figured he needed it more than me and i was also just glad i wasnt the one that needed it that much, or would be one to steel (he was dressed in a way that suggested that he probably wasnt supposed to be in the tournament player area).
as for me? ive found money here and there.. if it was associated with a situation (like a purse or other).. i would def attempt to find the owner and go to the store peeps to help me.
my "worth" is more than money.

Well, he has a little heart and left you money for a cup of coffee at least! Wasn't it hard to watch him and not say anything?

My favorite story is a wallet stuffed with cash and cards. Checked ID, drove to his house, called him from my car, told him to look out the window... I had something for him. He almost hung up on me because I pronounced his name incorrectly and thought I was pranking. The look on his face was priceless, he wanted to reward, I said pay it forward. I loved that day. : )

I don't think I could take it. I'd probably turn it in to someone. I mean, karma!

I have had people steal from me and I would never do that to someone. Somebody stole my sisters car with a U haul attached when I moved down to Florida. Everything that I owned was in that U haul. Thiefs are the epitome of selfishness.
