From a health stand point, 47% of people who have had tongue piercings for more than 4 years have significant chipping to their teeth. These piercings can cause drooling, nerve damage, taste loss, tooth loss and serious oral infections. More serious than that, your mouth has a host of bacteria that live only in your mouth. Piercing introduces that bacteria to your bloodstream and thus to the rest of your body, where it causes many problems. It can cause an infection called Ludwig's Angina, which causes the tongue to swell to the point it can inhibit breathing. The most serious problem this bacteria can cause is endocarditis, a condition that can weaken or even destroy heart valves, creating the need for a lifetime of medical treatment, transplant or death. Doctors have seen an alarming rise on this condition in young people who have tongue piercings. You have heard guys here tell you they are gross and make you look like a streetwalker and I'm telling you a few of the potential health risks. They limit career opportunities. You will need to weigh the benefits (you think they look cool) with the risks and make your decision.
I think they look like the women in the old Tarzan or similar jungle movies . National Geographic films too . On some of those the piercing get extreme and varied. I almost forgot to say I don't like any of them except for the ears lobes .
