How to tell my parents I don't believe in god?

my parents strongly believe in god and pray every day 3 times a day. I have been questioning my faith for a couple of years. and for a while I stopped believing. when's the best time to tell them and how?

Report as

I think, I don't know, how old are you? Are you an adult yet? If so, then any time is the right time to tell them, I mean, do they really have to know is the question if you are an adult. As a teenager, well, personally, I think its about just trying to please your parents right now, I am not sure how they will take it. Do they have to know really? The same question can be asked. Is it that important for them to know you don't believe in god anymore? Can it wait until you are an adult? Have a good think about those questions. If you feel its important for them to know, then yes, you should speak with them about it, but like I said, is it that important and do they have to know?

God gives parents a job to do is to raise the kids by his words. Teenager or adult it doesn't matter people can believe in God at any age. Maybe if her parents know they might help restore her/his faith.
Report as
No this person doesnt believe in god anymore, there is no restoration of faith unless they want it, which is not the question is it?
Report as
Remember children are covered by their parents prayers, because she mention that her parents are strong believer. So anything possible.

I'm a teen and thank you. And also sole you can't change my mind.

My dear I'm not the one to change your mind, That's God's job and he can if he wants to, but you have to let him into your heart. There is an eternal life I hope you know that dear.

If your parents are reasonable, over dinner might be acceptable. Otherwise, try to ease them into it. Start posing debatable questions and try to back yourself as much as possible. Then tell them.

You have tried debating with a religious person before haven't you? lol I'm just saying, its great advice if they were open minded to your own choices, but they usually aren't and insist there is nothing more to believe in then god. I can respect any religious person who doesn't do that, but for the most part, lets be honest, they do.
Report as
Dear there are any other things to believe in, except Almighty God who created the universe and all the stars and most importantly he created you. I'm talking about religion. Our salvation is tru Jesus Christ not tru RELIGION.
Report as
But I believe in nothing, just that mankind is mankind. I accept it for nothing more then it being amazing to be alive, I have no answer to as why we ar here any more then you do, your faith is blind, mine is to the life I lead right now. That is my belief.

There's only one way to tell them you don't believe in God, and that is by telling them straight to their face. Don't beat around the bush. Give them reasons, and expect them to be disappointed and annoyed.

You're very welcome. Just remember, you made this decision and it is your responsibilty to live with it's conscuences. I told my parents I am theist, and they are hardcore Catholics. They didn't like the fact I didn't believe in the Bible, but it was my decision.

Did your parents tell you about God since you were little? If not Your parents cannot help you get to heaven. I hope you restore your faith. Pray and God will guide you, you may not even have to tell them after all.

When one is truly freed from the chains of religion, no one, not even your false god, can force the manacles back onto his or her wrists.

My friend had that same problem , you can tell your parents but they will not take it calmly they'll do a number of things to get you back on the "good road" just stay firm in what you believe in, but be sure before you decide to tell them. It is ca be a very volatile subject, prepare for a big argument. But also keep an open mind, just because you question your belief now doesn't mean you always will ; ,

Ok and when there is no after life...
Oh wait I can't do anything. cause there's nothing. I mean I don't think that's the best way an it would be awesome to live forever but what makes cristanty differnt from any other religion? What makes it more correct? God has never "saved me" or I have never felt his presentce and when I used to pray I felt like I was talking out loud and it meant nothing.

Sweetheart listen to me. I feel like I have to answer this one. What do you think being a Christian is? Being a Christian is you as a person believe in God/Christ/Holy Spirit. Christians represent body of Christ I'm not talking about religion. There are so many religion out there, and you will find Christians in all of them. But RELIGION cannot save anyone whether you Catholic, Baptist, Adventist ect. but people should find a place to worship because Jesus where 2 or 3 people reunite in his name He shall be among them... You said you use to pray. God said seek me and thy shall find me. God has 3 answers for prayers, yes/no/maybe. You can feel his presence by perseverance in prayer, but you have to truly open your heart for him to come in. Even tru trials and temptations he will guide you, but you have to believe.

Don't tell them. It would break their heart and feel like a failure as a parent. Because a parent wants their children to have the same values and beliefs they have. Please, have enough respect for your parents to not confront them and challenge their faith Maybe some day you might change your mind. And might wish to take your words back. what do you think to accomplish by confronting them anyway? keep it to yourself.

First, you need to know why you do or do not believe. If your mature and educated enough, you will find the Bible is historically, archaeologically, scientifically proven to be correct. Enjoy your journey.

Well I'm a Christian but I think it's a good idea to tell them when you are all together. Hopefully they will understand and accept you are a atheist. And explain them why too, you do have a good reason. Freedom of religion right? Anyways good luck and hopefully they will accept it.

But its a right. Madidee has a right. I don't like it. It I will respect it. We are all human and we don't think the same. I'm a proud Christian but if madidee doesn't want to believe its ok. Everyone has a right to believe in any religion! I'm glad that is possible.

Don't go out of your way to let them know. If your opinion is asked, answer honestly. You might be surprised how long that takes.

Figure out why you don't believe that God created us. Once you have it ask your parents to explain what you think is the answer. Christians have faith in a supreme being because when you look around and see the order of things it is hard to believe they just happen to be here. The greatest miracle is the human being. The odds of conception are about a million to one, and yet here you are. Good luck.

Someone, I think it was Pat Condell, said to tell them you're gay. Then tell them you were only joking, actually you're just an atheist. They'll be so relieved that they won't mind.
