How can I help my friend stop cutting?

My friend has a pretty good life, but I think she's just depressed at the moment because she believes that back in February she broke a guy's heart. The guy now has a girlfriend and he's clearly moved on but she seems to be stuck in the past. Anyways, tonight she showed me her first cut. She says she did it with her nail because she didn't want to leave a scar. I've never had a friend that is depressed before and I just want to help. How can I? Should I talk to an adult? She's trying to figure out a way to break up with her boyfriend because as she says, "I know I'm going down and I just don't want to take him down with me." She's fifteen. This probably isn't a very serious situation yet, but I want to get help before things go south and I'm stuck feeling guilty. Any and all advice is very much appreciated.

I suspect that she is cutting and emotionally unstable because of other basic problems, perhaps chemical imbalance. The stuff with her boyfriend/s is just an excuse. She needs to get some serious emotional support, and soon. Use your best judgment and talk to either your own parents or hers. Continue to support her the best way you can; sounds like you're doing the right things. I hope these actions are something you are comfortable with. If not, maybe there is a school teacher you could speak to, or a church official, or another of her relatives besides parents. Keep trying, hang in there, and my hat's off to you for caring!

This is a very serious situation because cutting can only lead to worse if not recognized. your friend beds to realize her potential, show her what she means to people and how important she is to everyone around her.

Sweetie , Don't put yourself in danger because of this friend . But you should tell her parents about her problems maybe they can help . But always keep an eye on yourself not to fall into pier pressure . Stay away but help ..

I had a daughter who did cutting and cutting is very serious and can lead to suicide. You need to call the suicide prevention hot line at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) right away. They have someone on duty 24/7 and they can tell you what you need to do to help your friend.
Take care.
