Why is theraflu discontinued

Report as

Are you sure it's discounted? I can still see it's selling here http://bit.ly/therafluavailable as well as on other major retail stores.

Apparently, certain components were manufactured in China under less than stellar condition. The product will appear back on the shelves soon, according to my Pharmacist.

Nope, manufactured in Nebraska under less than stellar conditions.

Theraflu was discontinued because pseudoephedrine, an ingredient in the drug was used to produce methamphetamine. Methamphetamine is a psychostimulant that increases alertness, increase in libido, induces euphoria and increases concentration and is not recommended for use. However, alternative formulations have been put to the market.

It does not contain pseudoephedrine according to the ingredients. It also doe snot say anywhere that it is discontinued, the website does not say anything. Also if they discontinued things just b/c they have pseudoephedrine they would have to discontinue most OTC meds.

The plant that manufactures Theraflu, in Nebraska, was shut down to fix FDA issues. Hopefully it comes back. Several products were affected. Has nothing to do with China or pseudophedrine. It is made right here in the USA.

It's on a temporary distribution hold because the plant in Lincoln Nebraska didn't pass FDA inspection. There was no recall, had nothing to do with China or any of the ingredients. Go go Theraflu website!! If you have questions about anything try going to their webpage first. DONT ASSUME!

If it's just the plant where Theraflu is made then why have ALL of the generic forms of it been taken off the shelves as well?

Hasn't Been. I just purchased one at Walgreens about 30 Minutes ago.

I have tried all the major name drug stores in person and online and have not been able to purchase any kind of theraflu - either powdered packets, liquigels or the liquid. Just check eBay or Amazon sellers if you want to know how hard it is to find something. Amazon liquid theraflu $99 for one bottle?! I don't know why it's hard to find, I just know it is and that's NOT fear mongering. If you can purchase it do so in large quantities so you can resell and make some money - that's what lots of people seem to be doing . . . .

You can purchase a generic brand. I got a powdered pack called Flu & Severe Cold & Cough Distributed By PERRIGO, found at my local Deli Store.

Theraflu and the generics haven't been taken off the shelves. I can still buy theraflu at my local drug store. Can't find it at the big chain stores though.

All the generics were taken off the shelves too so I think it has something to do with the ingredients. I asked my pharmacist and he told me that it was being recalled and also their generic brand too. Why when something like this works so well they take it off?

PS: I can't find it in any Walgreen , CVS or Walmart, ..!!!!

Hate to break it to you guys but the Theraflu brand is owned by Novartis, a large pharmaceutical company and they make quite a lot of money off of it. So it was not pulled from the shelves because it "interferes with pharmaceutical companies" profits. It truly was a recall due to the plant failing the FDA inspection.

This is the truth why Theraflu is no longer available. Straight from the TheraFlu website on the recall link.

This is helpful information, but the truth is that Novartis has taken too long to get this product back on the shelves. They really need to speed things up.

Alka Seltzer is making the same product now a nd you can get generics of that. With all the data about Tylenol use that has come out there is a slightly different formula and instructions.

Same thing happened to their Excedrin Extra Strength 2 yrs ago and it took the manufacturer over a YEAR to get it back on the shelves! They drag out their timeframe and you'll check weekly...and be disappointed weekly! I guess they don't tell you the ACTUAL wait time because they're afraid a competitor will jump in & take over market share!

The above answers all seem to be at least a little wrong. If it is the factory in Nebraska, then why does EVERY generic also disappear and why didn't they tell the distributors when they will get it back? If it is something in it that they could make meth with, why hasn't a single news report mentioned it in 9 to 13 months it has been off the shelf. And I am sick of them pulling OTC drugs off the shelf because some yahoo can make meth with it, just make it only available 1 to a customer with ID. This country used to fight back against drugs, now we roll over and ruin the honest peoples lives. Bring back Theraflu NOW!!!

my guess would be "the generics" are made at the same plant! the whole name-brand vs generic is a TOTAL SCAM!

Theraflu is off the shelf but the website is saying that it will be back for the 2014/2015 flu season. Now If it still contains Acetaminophen is a different question. The good news is I am still able to get Alka-Seltzer Plus Night Severe Cold, Cough & Flu (made by Bayer) which contains the exact same ingredients as Theraflu. It is also the Lemon flavored mix in packets. I picked up a box at Smiths. So you may want to try there. If you really want it you can pick it up on Amazon as well.

Don't have an answer, but still have one packet of Theraflu from 2003 ("Best if sold by 07/2007"). It's a purple box and says on the bottom of the left side..."Distributed by NOVARTIS CONSUMER HEALTH, INC. Parsippany, NJ 07054-0622 *2003...MADE IN CANADA"). The ingredients listed on the back of the box are: Acetaminophen 1000mg / Dextromethorphan HBr 30mg / Guaifenesin 400mg / Pseudoephedrine HCI 60mg.

At Rite-Aid in California they have one spot on the shelf with a tag for TheraFlu saying "coming soon." Rite Aid also had on the shelf two generic versions of TheraFlu, a berry/menthol flavored daytime formula with Acetaminophen 650mg / Dextromethorphan HBr 20mg / Phenylephrine HCI 10mg. The nightime formula is nearly the same, but honey/lemon flavored and it replaces the Dextromethorphan HBr 20mg with Diphenhydramine HCI 25mg. Note no Pseudoephedrine.in either, now replaced with Phenylephrine HCI.

In my opinion the pharmaceutical company has taken it away because they realize it is the only thing on the market that works without having a prescription! Now they have mock products or generic twins that do not work as well. If you have the opportunity to purchase the original Theraflu, purchase it by the case!!!!!! E bay is selling it for $68.00 for one box of 6 packets. Very sad they take away the one thing we have found that helps tremendously with head or chest colds most doctors tell you just to give it time and provide no prescription.... Another restriction forced on the public in what is a free country! IF it was bad for us, why did it work so well? Those that abuse win and us that use it for what it is for lose!
