How do I tell my best guy friend that I like him?

I have felt this way since fifth grade.(We aren't in the same school anymore.) At one point, I had to lie about a rumor and tell him it wasn't true because we were in class. He's one of my best friends, so I want to tell without compromising our friendship.

I don't think there is a way to tell him without changing your friendship.
