It is a low frequency radio that can talk for 1000s of miles. I know of one incident were a boat lost power in the pacific and guy in Long Beach heard him on a Hamm radio calling a distress call and called the Coast Guard for help. U talk to these ham operators they always tell me one of these days we will need because there will be no other communications.
"Ham Radio" is a term used to describe the activities of licensed amateur radio operators. In general, it covers the activities worldwide of individuals whose hobby involves non-commercial radio operation and electronics, governed by both national and international rules and restrictions. In the US, all ham radio operators must obtain a license to operate from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
The amateur radio hobby is unique in that the licensed operators are legally allowed to design, build, and operate their own transmitters, receivers, amplifiers, antennas and more. There are literally dozens of sub-topics within the hobby to keep everyone interested, such as voice, digital, Morse code (CW), satellites, hidden transmitter hunting (RDF), Moon-bounce, meteor scatter, Slow Scan, Fast Scan, and Amateur TV, Emergency Communications, Weak Signal, Microwaves, Laser Communications, and much more.
Virtually every modern electronic technology available today was pioneered by Amateur Radio experimenters, including AM/FM radio, TV, cell phones, WiFi, satellites, even a revolutionary new treatment for cancer using low power HF radio waves (13.8 MHz)
