When my sons (3) were old enough to give up their pacifiers. I located a Mom with a new baby and the boys "gave" their pacifiers to the new baby. 1) they were old enough to understand what they did and 2) when they asked for one I reminded them that they helped the new baby with their pacifiers. That way they weren't in my trash for them to locate, but hers. This was the first in the lessons of sharing.
Why would u do that? My little sister only liked a pacifier for a week then she was off of it and I was so sad when she was done because she looked so cute with a pacifier. We still have the pacifiers 2 years later and shes 2 1/2 now and I say " put the pacifier in your mouth" then she takes it out and throws it. Plus a pacifier keeps them quiet. When they out grow it they'll stop by themselves when they want to. How old is the baby anyways. We can't answer without knowing how old the baby is.
My oldest kids are getting ready to turn three and I'm going to start taking them off it more. They only get it at bedtime right now. I would never take it away cold turkey, u have to take them off slowly

We had 1 pacifier left and then it got lost. We just went with it and told her it was gone. It was a rough couple of days...about a week to ten days really. It's a comfort thing and then getting it suddenly taken away...cold turkey...was hard. I can see why.
However, I agree that it needed to go, but I wouldn't recommend just taking it away. I liked the "giving" away idea or I've also heard that if you cut the tip, it is uncomfortable for them and then they want to give it up.
Basically, find a way to make HIS idea. At 18 months, I would try the cutting a little hole idea. If he doesn't notice it, make it a little bigger gradually. I wish that's what we would have been able to do.
Just take it away and trow it away it will be hard for a little bit,but he'll get it over it.You can also start taking it away slowly, like letting him have it fir shorter times a day, once he's through and doesn't want it anymore reward him.Hope this helps and good luck!
