I am religious and love Jesus Christ but why do some people who also claim to love him act so horribly?

For example, last week I saw this big group of 'religious' people attack this poor girl. Calling her names and bullying her and then they turned their hatred towards me. Why do religious people judge others and bully them? I thought God was love?

because they want the title of being religious to make them look good

People who do that are making something called a "sin" i suggest to not be like those people. Make good choices. God will protect you from people like that. :D

some people use religion as an excuse to justify certain mob mentality and bad behavior.I believe in God, but also feel I don't need to read the Bible every day or go to church every Sunday. It is all in how you treat others and represent Christ.

It's people like that, that give us who are spiritual and love and follow God a bad name! If you say you love God, God is love and should be in you! That means to love one another, just as he loves everybody!

This is what religion does. It gives those who do not deserve a seat of power a mob to back up their vile behaviors. Didn't you get the memo? -They're already excused for this in their minds. The thing is that religious extremists and violent gangs have very much in common. There is more to the bible than you probably realize but believe what you like.

Jesus said you can tell by the fruits they produce , if a tree produces no fruitage jesus said it is cut down and thrown into the fire , so these people may claim to be Christians but you can see yourself that there not just real,. Whereas you produce fine fruits and people can see the fruits you produce ,. So don't let these people worry you

The trick is to separate religion and the love of God from people who use religion as an excuse to judge, hate, and condemn. These people are not very different from the people who crucified Jesus, nor are they different from those who judge people with different lifestyles...they are just wearing sheep's wool. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of very wonderful people who love God and work very diligently at following what they perceive to be His word; just as there are many non-Christians that love and follow their own God. I'm just talking about people who are judgmental, bullying, and mean--Christian or non-Christian who use religion or creed to justify their little minds..

Religious or Irreligious (non-religious)?
I think you will agree LoveChrist that the two should not be confused; and that the group you mention acted irreligiously, regardless of their stated beliefs. Why do people act that way? We all inherit the original sin of our first parents, Adam & Eve, which is removed from our souls, during Christian baptism, but leaves us with a damaged human nature, causing us to be inclined to do evil; preferring to do the bad, instead of the good; even liking, and deriving pleasure, from doing the bad. We cannot correct this in ourselves, by our own natural power, but need the supernatural power of God's grace (help) to do it. Even with his help, it's a struggle, especially, in the beginning, but gets easier with constant effort and practice, by which we become virtuous, instead of vicious (full of vice). Many people will do things, under the influence of a group, that they would not do on their own. I hope this helps to answer your question: a very good one.
Frank

Not all churches teach a message of knowing God personally in a spirit of love and peace. When I was a child I belonged to a church that taught simple obedience, or you'll go to hell. There was nothing about knowing God personally, feeling His spirit, loving others, etc.
I think people that were raised in a tradition that didn't include a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, an understanding of his message of love, become people who are judgmental and faultfinding with others.
I notice such people often are very good about quoting scriptures, and specific doctrines, but say next to nothing about Christ's love, and forgiveness. They don't seem to understand the feeling of peace that comes from knowing the spirit of the God of love. I often feel pity for people who are angry about religion.

The problem resides in the fact our eyes are focused on mans actions and not Gods nature
Man , religious or not , will disappoint us and fail miserably. God will not fail us.

They lie, or don't truly understand the religion and just go along to be part of the group, and since they don't truly know the religion they think it's ok to spread hate.

Here's what you say the next time that happens, "you all "act"like followers of Christ, but where's the love???". ( you have my permission to use air quotes to emphasize "act") hope this helps, :) Beth

Actually I find it better to avoid confronting such people. I even made the mistake of trying to interact with then here. People who are so filled with those kind of negative emotions will not be receptive to a message of love. Worse, they are a drain on you spirit.
So in the end, nothing positive is gained, and you have lost you own closeness to the spirit for a time. The spirit always withdraws when there is contention.

While not all Christians do the same, yet the number of those who do is immense. Their logic is very simple -- why should the Christians show love, when their God would hate, with an eternal and implacable hatred, the principal portion of mankind upon the earth? It is impossible for the imagination to conceive of a greater atrocity than has been perpetrated by Christianity from time immemorial. Every nerve in the human body capable of pain has been sought out and touched. From Augustine until now, the spirit of most Christians has remained the same. There has been the same intolerance, the same undying hatred of all who think for themselves, and the same determination to crush out of the human brain all opposition, and all knowledge inconsistent with their superstitious creed. The Christians persecute the LIVING and their God burns, for all eternity, the DEAD. Why should a Christian be better than his God?

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. (1 John 4:7 KJV)==================================But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (1 John 4:8 NLT)
