I was bitten by a brown spider that almost looked like a black widow... Should I be concerned?

I live in California, Covina, and I have NEVER seen a brown spider that looks like that... except in Texas... Keep in mind that my idea isn't far fetched because my uncle actually drove from a rural town in Texas (Cooper) all the way to my hometown. It was about average in male size, and looked a lot like a black widow, but was brown. I killed it as soon as I felt the sting, so I didn't get to see it's underside. Anyway, I plan to go to a hospital in a bit, I'm gonna ask my buddy to drive me there, but it won't be a while till he gets here. I could really use some leads so I can tell them the species possibilities ASAP! Thanks guys.

I got bit by a spider earlier year this and it hurt! I am not a wimp when it comes to pain. The bite swelled up and turned purple almost immediately. I went to the ER. They sent me home with a glorified neosporin ointment and told me they can't do anything for a spider bite. So just wash it, and put some neosporin on it and save your time and money.

There are brown widows spiders and they are apparently fairly common in parts of CA. If it was a male, then you may not have much to worry about, but if the female ones are more toxic. Definitely might want to get it checked out as soon as you can.

Try calling your local poison control. It should be listed in the first few pages of your phonebook with other emergency service contact numbers. If you still have the spider's body, keep it! If you do get sick, ER staff can identify its toxicity/species fairly easily.
