I think you are getting it into DFU mode. Maybe it's your cord or drivers. What program and version are you using to jailbreak.

I am using greenpo1son RC6 4.2.1 and I am using a(n) philips cord for my ipod not the cord that came with it do you think that has something to do with it?

Yes I have found that you need to use an Apple cord to jailbreak in DFU mode. However there are a ton of people that say it doesn't matter, it doesn't hurt to try it. Also why can't you get into DFU mode? When you're successfully in DFU mode the screen should be completely black and just pressing the power button or home button won't boot or make your phone visually respond. To get out of DFU you have to do a hard reset by holding the home and power button until the Apple logo appears. Maybe you were in DFU and didn't even know it?
