2 yr old Weim had surgery in july Vet says she must have stitched a nerve as dog cant quit licking healed area. 2 wks of laser but no help

Not enough skin on leg area to do another surgery plus could end up worse than he is now. This 100 pound dog is trying to live with a cone shaped lamp shade collar constantly around his neck! Now vet suggests a regimen of $800 antibiotics for two months....He was fine bf surgery - removal of plate from early injury when small pup. Any suggestions?

if the surgery went ok, then the incision should heal soon. unfortunately, the dog having to wear the cone is standard post-surg. procedure; you and the dog need to learn to deal with him having it for a while because its for his benefit so that he doesnt mess up the incision by biting or licking it. he should not be able to lick the incision with the cone on, he can try but it prevents him from actually doing it. assumingly, the vet is suggesting antibiotics because his incision is now infected? perhaps go to a different vet to get a second opinion on antibiotic treatments if the first is too expensive for you.

From your description, i suggest that you continue the visits to the vet and follow the recommendations that he give. Request him to change the type of treatment if possible. Alternatively, you can visit a different vet from whom you will have a different suggestion or opinion.

I think I'd seek out a second opinion. If you have a vet school in your area, they might be able to suggest a new therapy or surgical procedure your vet doesn't know about.
