How do I get my puppy to stop barking when it is unnecessary?

My 4 month old pup stays indoors. We like for her to bark signalling when she needs to go out, etc. But lately she barks loudly and often for o apparent reason! It's driving our family batty! We love her to pieces, and are certainly going to keep her, but anyone have any tips for training her not to bark unless she wants to communicate a real need?

When a dog does that, make a sound that gets the dogs attention. Like a loud 'ack'. As soon as he stops, say good boy and as soon as he does it again, make the sound. It will teach him that you don't like him barking at certain times and he will start to do it less. Dogs are trained best by conditioning. That means you must do the same thing every time so they will start to get it. Hitting them will not help. You must make the sound as soon as they bark and make the sound deep not high pitched. Dogs respond to a deeper pitch like they would to another dog who is the pack leader/alpha. You are the alpha now. You must lead by example.

You can teach her "no bark" but I confess to having only limited success with my Border Collie. She'll bark all of a sudden for no reason that I can see; it's especially annoying early in the morning when I'm eating my breakfast and she's laying on my feet under the table. Just a single, very loud bark. Maybe to make sure I'm really awake.
Also, I keep a radio on most of the time to help cover up noises from outside. I live on a fairly busy street, with both car and foot traffic. Used to be she barked at everything that went by the house. At least she doesn't do that anymore.

Very simple. All it takes us 2 or 3 long walks per day.

Fill an empty water bottle with pennies or stones. When your dog barks and you don't want it to, give it a shake and tell it no. It worked for my dog. Give it a try.
