Starting a business is hard work, why do people do it?

I'm thinking of starting a specialty shop, what would make someone leave their day job and begin to work for themselves? There is so much competition and so much work to do to get started, why become an entrepreneur? I need motivation.

You really need to find the motivation for yourself. None of us here can look into your heart and see what drives you. Starting your own business is much like giving birth. It needs to be something that you simply HAVE to do in order to be happy. It's not a question of wanting to do it; you have to NEED it in order for it to be important enough to you to give it the attention and effort it will require.

Because it's the American way. Being self-employed is hard work but the rewards are much greater. But if you're lazy, don't do it. It's only for those who have a strong work ethic.
