How do you get rid of a massive headache ?

Report as

Take a couple Tylenol, aspirin, or ibuprofen. Lie down in a quiet, dark room with a cold, wet wash cloth on your forehead, or covering your eyes. Lie very still 'til the headache passes... or, take a nap if you can.

Ha, I'm sure it does help SOME types of headaches, especially tension headaches, but when I have a migraine... se x is the last thing I feel like doing! According to the b/f, se x is the answer to everything. He'd tell me it cures cancer if it meant he was gonna "get some action," hahaha!! XD

but take it from a lady it does help, unless you have climatic migraines, then you usually need a dentist

I AM a lady... a 42-yr.-old lady. All that helps my migraines is what I wrote in my answer below. I get such bad headaches, I actually vomit & that hardly "puts me in the mood," if ya know what I mean... :)

To get rid of a massive headache, you need to do relaxation exercises since they are often responsible for the headaches. Do longer exhales and inhales. You should also take medication. Visit a doctor for a prescription of the best medication for your headache. Visit http://www.ehow.com/how_4582171_rid-migraine-headache.html for more information.

Ignore this answer, it's from a "robot." It doesn't even make any sense!
"It" said, "you need to do relaxation exercises since they are often responsible for the headaches"
Why would you do relaxation exercises if they're responsible for headaches? Hahahaha!!
The link posted might have some helpful info... I didn't check it out...

My answer (above this one) is what I do when I have a migraine & it works for me, so... I hope it'll work for you too! Feel better... :)

You don't KNOW this is a migraine! The pain was triggered by washing her hair, so a neck lesion is very likely to be the problem. Addressing that requires very skilled treatment - and medication is not indicated until you know what exactly is wrong....

I agree - these frivolous replies are unkind to say the least. This lady has asked a serious question in good faith and she can reasonably expect constructive, sensible suggestions.

Before you do ANYTHING, you must find out WHY you have this massive headache. It could be a minor stroke, in which case you need special (and urgent) treatment. You may have a lesion in your neck vertebrae - even an atlas jam, which is very painful. The one thing your headache ISN'T is a deficiency of aspirin! Don't take powerful painkillers to mask what could be a serious symptom - I presume you wouldn't be asking this question if the neuralgia wasn't exceptional. Someone has mentioned migraines - do you have nausea, vomiting, severe one-sided pain - does it throb, is it relieved by pressure or hot applications?

If you have a trusted GP, go for an opinion and professional treatment. If you know what is causing the pain, or would prefer not to use powerful drugs, consult a Homeopath. For skeletal-related pain you will need a Chiropractor or an Osteopath - possibly even a Therapeutic Masseur. Unusually severe headaches need to be treated with great respect as they could be a warning of something very serious going on....

It was because I washed my hair and went to sleep so I got a big head ache

Hmmm. Try ice packs (frozen peas work just fine!) and see if that relieves the pain. If that makes you feel better, a gentle walk in the fresh air should clear even more distress. If you don't normally use much caffeine, then a strong black coffee may just blow away the rest of the pain. Try gently massaging your temples - the soft sides of your head, level with your ears. If you have access to some Lavender perfumed product, that increases to relaxing effect of the temle massage and can ease a headache like magic. A headache caused in that way is a sign of a general lowering of your health. The Homeopathic remedy for that cause is usually Belladonna 30C - obtainable from a Health Shop or speciality store. If none of that helps, please seek a professional opinion - I am concerned for you - there is something not right going on. And painkillers won't fix anything but the symptom....

That happens to me, too. For whatever reason, if I sleep with wet hair, I get a bad headache.
My solution to that is: If you get bad headaches from sleeping w/ wet hair... don't sleep with wet hair! :)

Find a happy place, lol. Make sure the area is quiet, and peaceful. Too much noise usually gets my aching; an ice bag helps; maybe sleep, a common way of getting a headache is because of not enough rest; eating, also a common way of headaches, when belly feels hungry; have a someone massage you, maybe you're hurting somewhere. But most importantly, find out why you have this headache!
Hope you feel better!!:)

I had a really major headache at the age of 32 yrs old that was fierce ..it would not go away.I went to the Dr.was was told I was stressed,to talk to a shrink. After 3 months of suffering,I had a seizure in our swimming pool, and our 11 yr old son,and 14 yr old daughter saved my life from the bottom of that pool..hospital finally found my brain tumor..!Please get any headaches that are different, will not go away, checked. If the Drs. donot find a reason for the headache's get another opinion,if next Dr.doesn't listen or find a reason, but you know in your heart donot give up.Find someone that will listen to you.My best Dr.was my instinct.I would not give up.I have had a second brain tumor removed, and now have a 3rd one that is inoperable.Take care of your health, rely on yourself ..

You are welcome...I have just found through life my instincts are my best teacher.I am not saying to self diagnose from the net,a lot of people do that and end up so stressed from what they read...just use your common sense people if a headache or anything with your body is out of the normal range for you,get it checked.Remember Dr's are human also, they do their best but also misdiagnose,as I said in my previous note if you aren't satisfied get another opinion. With my health issues at times I have had 4 opinions, then I will take the ones that made the most reasonable medical sense to me.I also looked for the Drs opinions that were the same. I am alive because I listened to my instincts.Remember take good care of yourselves, life is short.

Sometimes really bad headaches are a result of dehydration, and if you ingest alot of caffeine or alcohol and some medications it is easy to become dehydrated and not know it. Drinking an ELECTROLYTE sports drink or a pharmacy product like Gastrolite or Hydralite (which contain electrolytes for treatment of dehydration AND taste good) can completely cure a headache in less than 10minutes!
