How can I get myself to try new food?

I am a very fussy vegetarian. I eat most vegetables and fruit, rice, pasta, bread, cheese, milk, and yoghurt but not things like eggs, courgettes, mushrooms, or any fish. Any suggestions on how I can pursuade myself to start trying new things? Apart from meat.

Sounds like me (I live mostly on carbs!), but I will TRY anything once...
That's really all you can do -- try new foods. If you don't like 'em, you don't like 'em... but at least give things a chance...
I've been vegetarian since about age 5, but my b/f got me to try baked cod & I liked it... a lot! We've made it several times & it's really good. He also talked me into trying filet mignon, yuck... different types of chicken... yuck... but at least I've tried 'em! :)

Eggs would be considered a part of the meat family. I think you should try making a mixture of what you already like and create a patty of some sort that would emulate meat products or flavors. Try Eggplant, asparagus & tofu. Mixed them together using a food processor and create the patties. Season with oregano, Johnny's and maybe even add something to help with your fiber like.. brocoli or coli-flower.

That sounds disgusting. No offence but I don't really like eating processed food. It makes me feel ill. .

Experiment with various flat breads like tortillas, pita, and lefse.

Experiment with various herbs and spices. Basil pesto is great on a lot of stuff.

Mix the new food in with the food you currently like. If it tastes bad to you then you don't have to eat it. If you enjoy the next taste then try it by itself.

Well, one thing to try is just force yourself to do it; even if you have to hold your nose. Your sense of smell is stronger than the sence of taste.
Another thing to try is to have someone fix a meal with one or more of the foods it it and not tell you untill after you are through with the meal.

If you like cake, cookies, or meatloaf, then you have eaten eggs and not known it.

i always try food the same way i take medicine if you really want to try it or you have to take medicine just pretend its something you like. for example if liquid medicine is red pretend its big red if you have to take a pill pretend its a grape of something you really like. if you want to try new food then you pretend its a different food that you like if you try the food and you dont like it but you really want to love that food then take small bits of it and eat it with different food that you really like the eventually your taste buds will get used to the taste and you will start to like the food.

i try making new food but in different ways so if you want to try fish you make your own dish and ask some of your friends to make some too and bring it over and you could have a food party by trying the different ways and finding out which way you like a food cooked and hang out with your friends:) I hope this heeled!!

First, decide which kind of person you are: at the grocery store, do you tend to purchase "original" flavor products (like Triscuits or Cheese-Its) and eat them plain, or purchase them original and add your own combinations of toppings, or purchase "variety" flavors (like Rosemary, Olive Oil, & Cracked Pepper Triscuits, or Smoked Cheddar & Pepper Jack Cheese-Its Duoz)? If plain and original, sample a product, food by itself, separating the various textures and/or components to find which part works for you. I like e'claires, but am finicky cuz the chocolate part can be icky if made wrong and will always eat the flaky pastry first. If you like original+personal topping, pick a fav combo of toppings and add it to everything. I love honey, and will add my fav unpasturized cinnamon honey to anything from milk to hashbrowns to peas. If you like store creations, purchase the fun size and eat a dollop with something you like. Have friends join in with the combos and cooking duties.

Another, low-pressure way to expand the palette is to seek out and sample varieties of produce you already enjoy. You like fruit, so have probably had a peach or two. Did you know there are over 80 varieties of peaches alone! Ever had a pumpkin peach (they look squashed like a minipumpkin, but are so sweet). Bosc pears and have a rougher, brown-golden skin, but are way better (musky and sweet, vaguely maple-tasting) than plain green (tangy) Bartletts. Asian pears are so delicate and juicier than any apple. Grape basil tastes like grapes. Thai basil is spicy. Mexicola avocados have an edible, softer skin. etc...

Hold your nose closed. The sense of taste comes from the sense of smell.

Our preferences are changing as we grow or age. When I was little I was extremely picky. But now I eat a lot of different and healthy things. You have to try the food/drink at least three times(on different occasions) to decide if you like it or not. Also cooking or preparing differently will change the taste of it and your tolerance for it.If there is a food you still don't like wait 6 months to try it again. You taste buds may agree then.

Try a little of something new on the side with a lot of something you already like. It'll be way too intimidating to try to force yourself to eat an entire plate of strange foods.

Eating new things is a difficult task for me too. I have to bring myself to do it. The thing is that more your tongue tastes new food, more you get acquainted and comfortable with it. But DON'T eat something under pressure. It will ruin the whole plan and would delay your plan. Try something you really feel to. Don't be shy at all, like me. Hope this works for you!

Everyone has good answers. It comes down to is try it, you might like it. Since you are a vegetarian you can experiment with different dressings and spices. Quite a few vegetarians include fish in their diet for it's nutrition and antioxidants. Relax it is your decision.

I was never really a vegetarian, but I used to be super picky and I eventually learned how to try new things. If I like pepperoni hot pockets, why wouldn't I like pepperoni pizza? So one day, I tried it and I liked it. I eat lean pockets now which are healthier than hot pockets. I asked myself questions and that's how I was able to try new things and I would only take 1 bite of the food I'm trying to see if it liked it, if I didn't, then I wouldn't finish it and if I did like what I tried, I'd eat it more often and finish it.

missannjack has a great point. If u like salad, then try using different dressings to put on it. In my opinion, Ranch dressing is the most common dressing used for salads. If u like dried cranberries, or crutons add that food into the salad. And also like missannjack said, it's your decision.

I go to a restaurant where they serve the food I want to try. They know best how to prepare it. You could also go to a friend who knows how to prepare the food you want to try. Do not try to prepare it yourself the first time, if you do something wrong you will have a harder time trying it again.
