Why does my period smell fishy?

Report as

Hey, perfectly normal question, and if it weren't for the almighty period, none of us would be here. It smells that way because once it leaves the body it starts to break down (decompose) like all natural matter. You can always use scented pads, and carry most towelettes to stay fresh and clean. Change your protection often, especially on heavy days. Good luck sweety.

It is perfectly normal with family or a close friend , the way she phrased it wasn't something to blurt out over the Internet , it's courtesy . && scented pads tend to have you smell the fishy and deodorant together , but don't get upset , just an opinion lol .

Oh I am never upset, and plz don't think that I am. I am just aware that many of these girls are very young, some are just starting to blossom, if you know what i mean. And they are scared and full of questions and they really don't know where else to get these answers.

Well in my opinion.

All don't. If you change your protection often, especially on heavy days and keep feminine wipes that help deodorize and cleanse. Nobody ever has to know you have your period.

Yes, periods can have fishy smells but I think it all depends on how you take care of it!

I suggest a vaginal douche when your period ends. It can be a commercially prepared one or you can prepare a quart of warm water with a cup of vinegar and place it into a douche container.
The odor is not normal, so if the douche doesnt help, see your doctor

good advice

Do your research before you do that. Douching is one of the worse things you can do... ask any GYNO this and they will tell you. It strips away a lot of good bacteria that actually helps your uterus stay "clean". The vagina is a self-cleaning oven. All you should use is the good old fashion soap and water. If you feel that's not doing the trick, buy FDS special liquid soap and spray for the vagina.

Kiv! You are correct ! My gyno said once on awhile, under certain circumstances , with the homemade v&w, but it's not good regularly. She sounds like she may have infection!

Yep Bubbles, that's correct, Over doing it can strip away natural bacteria and cause an imbalance which can also lead to odor. The acid in the vinegar raises the acidity in the vagina and makes it inhospital to the bad bacteria. I am old school though, was raised in the South where they slapped a girdle on you at 12 and bought you a really good supportive bra. Douching was the norm. I am not a Doctor so I cannot dispute their advice. But doesn't it seem like, vaginal infections of various sorts seemed to have increased with the decline of this basic hygenic technique?

I would quess , yes!! Exactly in the way we abuse antibotics and hand sanitizer ; ). Developing strains of resistant bacteria!!! Always a pleasure ms K ! : )

All of the answers are helpful! you may need to simply take extra care with hygiene. One thing to mention... If this odor occurs any other time , you need to see DR. it is called bacterial vaginosis. it Is not uncommon , but needs to be treated with antibiotics. it is not exclusively caused by having sex. it occurs for many other reasons .
