Do we really need math?

honestly do we? I mean I know we need the four basic operations addition subtraction multiplication an division but I don't see why we would need algebra or geometry in our lives I'm failing geometry and its honestly making me miserable I do we'll in all my other classes though and I don't wanna do something in the future that requires all this complicated math I wanna be a lead guitarist in a rock band because that's honestly what I would like to do

The computer you just used to type your question would not be possible without the math you are questioning.

Report as

Math is very important. It's how we deal with money.

Report as
I know that and that's where the basic operations come in
Report as
Take AP micro/macro economics & AP stats and THEN tell us that you only need the basic operations. Trust me- there would not be an entire class or even career for it if it were as simple as you think.
Report as

yes

Report as

You betcha we do. It's used all the time, in everyday life.

Report as
I know we need the basics but do we really need all that extra crap they teach? Most people say they've never used that in life
Report as

i highly doubt that. four basic operations, yes. ratios and fractions, yes. everything else, probably not. unless if you are a teacher teaching that degree. i have not yet found somebody that can prove to me that i need this stuff in my daily life.

Report as
Exactly! That's what I'm saying I don't know why we need all this extra crap they give

Teaches you critical thinking- actually puts your mind at work.

How do we count the "Greens" if we dont have math?

Oh, wait.. they're called "Helpful" now right? :P

Report as
um... its called 1,2, 3, 4, 5... it doesnt take that much
Report as
Exactly.

As much as I hate it, we do. Not everyone will need that hard, ridiculous math if their aspired career does not need it, but everyone needs simple arithmetic.

Not of you plan on working at McD's your whole life ... well except for the cash register ... heck even that does the Mary for you.

Report as
Who said anything about working at McDonald's my whole life? I'm great at everything but math
Report as
Good, hopefully you won't need it, but are the people who run your school psychic? How do they know you won't need it? How do YOU know you won't need it? Should the school just ask in 1st grade "Who doesn't wanna do math? Go to this classroom. Whoever does want a high paying job in the aerospace industry go to that other classroom."
Report as
Ha I agree with that ^.
Report as

I hate to say it but yeah we do need it-it helps later on in life.

Yupp, Math is essential in day to day business and life. It can also give you an edge when trying to attain jobs.

Math in all its levels of complexity is extremely important as a tool for understanding the world we live in. Find someone who can show you how to apply algebra, trigonometry, geometry, etc to everyday life. If that doesn't pique your interest, that's ok, maybe your just not a left brain person. I suggest being sure that you really are more of an artist type and not just being mentally lazy though. You can have both you know.

I am smart but I think I have a gift in music it only took me like 2 months to learn some of my favorite songs on guitar
Report as
That's good. I'm a musician also. Don't underestimate the importance of the other academias though.

You wouldn't have many of the things you take for granted without Maths. Because anything engineered requires it: cars, bridges, buildings, computers, aeroplanes, cellphones, the internet etc. Most things you buy are-mass produced using technology that depends on maths. Without it there would be no standards of measurement and production, and everything would be hand-crafted, costing much more time and effort to create. Only the rich could afford the prices. You would have to walk everywhere or take a horse. You would live in a mud hut.

I wondered the same question.Yes we need math, but I only see the use of algebra and geometry for couple of jobs.So unless your going into one of the jobs I don't see the point of taking it.

Report as
Most of the job growth in the U.S. is in science, technology, engineering and math. It's true that things like the quadratic formula aren't worth memorizing (you can always look them up),but the symbol manipulation skills show up all the time, everywhere.
Report as

You may not need it, but if you like tech then yes "we" need it. And if you think thats tough, try trig or calculus.

Report as
If it was not for a friend of mine, I would not have passed my cal class in college. Thank God I had the choice to drop it once I was in university. Didnt mean to spy on your answers but i remember once you saying that you are a lab tech or something, not sure.

Chemist, yeah

That's great! Good for you buddy!
Report as

It's extremely important! We couldn't even have gone to the moon without math!

Report as

I was not very good in math either but my hubby is and we both use it daily. Sounds like you might need a good tutor.

Report as

Math is like logic. You may not use the specific stuff, but you want to know how to figure things out. Geometry is pretty simple- it's sort of common sense thinking (or thinking logically, I guess) You should learn how to FIGURE out things, rather than having them served to you. Certain classes like biology will "serve" to you because you basically get a bunch of terms to memorize for a test the next day. What good will that do? But then chemistry is where you're taught certain skills and then you actually have to think and use reasoning to find the answers. Using reasoning & actually THINKING will do you & your mind more good than being a human xerox machine. Doing well in math & certain science classes shows that you're capable of higher level thinking & actually working & figuring things out to get an answer. School isn't all about getting a work sheet & then copying all the answers straight outta the book.
