Did I do this right? (Sorry for all the math q's!) details

here is the word problem: "an architect designs a rectangle flower garden such that the width is exactly two thirds of the length. if 260 feet o the antique picket fencing are used to enclose the garden, find the dimensions of the garden" ok so what I did was A=L?W. I put 260 as the area and 2/3X as the length. I then dived 260 by 2/3 and got 390 and put that as the width but that can't be right... can it? how do you do this problem? I suck at math... especially word problems....

Ok let us think about it together and do it step by step..
"width is exactly two thirds of the length" --> W = 2/3 L <-- equation (1)
Since area of rectangle is Length x width, then A = (2/3) L x L = (2/3) L^2 <-- equation (2)

"if 260 feet o the antique picket fencing are used to enclose the garden", the fence is enclosed (around/surround) the garden so it is Perimeter (circumference) and not area.
Perimeter of rectangle = 2 (L + W), thus;
260 = 2 (L + W)
130 = L + W <-- equation (3)

Since W = 2/3 L, thus equation 3 can be written in this form;
130 = L + (2/3) L <-- From here you will be able to find (L), then substitute (L) in equation (1) to find (W) and in equation (2) to find the area.

So the formula is p=2L+2W then right? :) and 260=2(/3)+2W?

P = 2(L + W) = 2L + 2W
Since W = (2/3)L, then 2W = 2(2/3)L = (4/3) L
So, P = 2L + (4/3)L = (10/3)L

The 260 feet is the parameter, not the area. So, draw a rectangle and divide each length into 3 parts and the widths into 2 parts. Now you have 10 equal length parts. I did this so I could figure out my 2/3. So you divide the 260 parameter by the 10 equal unknown sides and get 26. Each one of those sections is 26 feet. So your lengths are 78 feet (26 feet for each length and you had 3 equal parts for each side). Your widths are 52 feet each (26 feet for each width and you had 2 equal parts for each side. I'm sure there is an easier way to do this, but I don't know it. I do, however know that the area of something is Length x width. Parameter is the distance around the outside as in the picket fence. Hope this helped a little.

Yeah. Your sides need to equal 260 feet. And if the width is 2/3s the length, then I just split up the rectangle. But Raffy206 has the cool set up that you should be using. It's been a while since I've been in school:) LOL
