Does it matter? All we need to know is that's what it is now.

Nopeee! They were always short numbers though, and they tried to get numbers easy to remember. In short, it was changed to be easier. Since most people didn't remember the numbers so they'd have to ask the operator! xD

This is what I just read. Wiki makes the world smarter! c: most of the time. When people get their facts straight... lol anyways, here ya go!

No, you used to have to dial zero and ask the operator who you wanted, police, fire or ambulance.

Every police dept has its own phone number like every house does. But it easier to call a easy short number like 911. 911 Is actually a service that routes you to the appropriate number and department.

When I started in 1975 (yes I'm old) it was an 800 number for the sheriff's department I started with! even though the system started in 1968, it took a while for agencies to get funding to use 911
