Is it bad for a Christian to study Demonology?

Report as
Apep

Demonology is an academic topic of study. I don't see why an understanding of such things throughout the history of mankind would be a bad thing. Sun Tzu once said "know your enemy". I'd imagine this would equate to the same analogy.

I don't believe there is anything wrong with dealing with or studying the paranormal or the unknown. I've been raised in church and was never shunned or exiled for doing so, but I would like to say, tread your waters carefully. I'm a sensitive and have seen ghost my whole life, so of course I've always been intrigued. I once invited a demon into my home believing it to be my grandfather. It haunted me for about a year until we finally blessed my house so much it left. It has been about 2 years and still have things happen that I think may be it following me but I always pray him away and rebuke it. I still see spirits and I still watch ghost hunters (my favorite show!!) but I just try and stay extremely careful. Just thought Id share! :)

It is bad. The Bible tells us to stay away from things like that.

The very comprehension of the material is one thing, abiding by it is another. It's not a bad thing to study it.

You are right. "Know your enemy"
is a good saying. It scares me too much though.

Christians should stay away from anything directly dealing with satan and its followers. Your mind will be open to influences and temptations that you shouldnt expose yourself to.

As Christians we must aim to imitate Jesus' example and serve God, his father, with a whole heart, as Jesus did while on earth. So, we must be very careful when it comes to demons, because they serve Satan. Demons use spiritism to mislead people and the practice of spiritism is the involvement with the demons directly or through a human medium. In Galatians 5:19-21, we find spiritism as one of the things that God condemns, and warns us to keep free from everything connected with it. There are other ways that demons mislead people, if you want to know just ask.
Now, you may think that by just analyzing or investigating demons and not worshiping them that you will be ok. However, notice what 1 Corinthians 10:21 mentions: "You cannot be drinking the cup of Jehovah and the cup of demons; you cannot be partaking of 'the table of Jehovah' and the table of demons." This text tells us that we cannot serve God and be dealing with demons. Why? Jesus helps us understand in Matthew 6:24, which mentions that we cannot slave for two masters because it will reach a point where we will love one more than the other.
In my opinion, I do not think its the best idea.

Studying demonology is not worshipping Satan or demons. I suppose studying the minds and activities of serial killers makes you a serial killer, too? You're being ridiculous.

Thank you, suzie.
Apep: I was not trying to say that by studying Demonology one will become a demon. However, as suzie and I mentioned, demons mislead people. Why? Because they follow their "father's" ways, as seen in Jesus' words in John 8:44: "You are from your father the Devil, and you wish to do the desires of your father. That one was a manslayer when he began, and he did not stand fast in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he speaks the lie, he speaks according to his own disposition, because he is a liar and the father of [the lie]." What was the first lie? The one that came from Satan when he mislead Adam and Eve.
Therefore, if Satan's purpose is to lead us away from God and righteousness, and the demons are his followers, don't you think they will do anything in their power to turn us away from God?
However, many people are unaware of this because in order to fulfill his purpose with the most success, Satan "keeps transforming himself into an angel of light", as mentioned in 2 Corinthians 11:14. He and his demons make people believe that their ways of rebelion are better than God's way.
