Why do people think that Mary was 14 when she was pregnant with Jesus?

I've read all the Gospels and never saw that anywhere.....is it just tradition? How did they come up with this age? Is there any proof behind it? This isn't meant to be an obscene question but I just see it a lot

Between 14 and 17 because that was the trafitional age for girls to marry in those days. Prime child bearing years when they could most safely and successfully have healthy live births. The average life expectancy then was about 55 years. Infant mortality and death of women in child birth were HIGH. The younger a woman was the more likely it was that both she and her child would survive a birth.
Jewish children became officially adults at 12 or 13. Boys/men traditiinally waited to marry until they were established in a trade and could afford to support a family but girls married very early.
So Mary was likely between 14-17, probably closer to 14, while her husband Joseph was likely 15-20 years older, around 25-35 years old.

In keeping with Jewish custom, the betrothal would have taken place when she was around 12, and the birth of Jesus about a year later.
