Does anyone have an inexpensive idea for a kitchen back splash?

Our whole-house remodel has taken most of our remodel budget to complete. We need ideas for an inexpensive, effective, and easy to install kitchen back splash. Everything on the market is either expensive, challenging to install, or both. We only have about $40 to work with.

Try a sheet metal place and get a piece of sheet metal. You can paint it with heat resistant paint.
Maybe tile... Go somewhere like lowes or Home Depot . Ask for 2nd grade tile that's chipped. Buy a box of it for maybe $10.

It really depends on how much room we are talking. I saw a picture of one that used blackboard paint. That way you can write a menu or a recipe above your stove, or change a message to suit your needs. Sometime if you go to a salvage yard you can get tin tiles cheap. If you don't have a lot of square footage to cover that can work. I used 12x12 floor tile that I paid 68 cents each for on my last remodel.

Go to thrift stores and buy china (or stone ware) dishes, cups, saucers, etc., break them and put a random mosaic pattern up. You can find plain or patterned in the colors you want.
