In what ways have laws been used to eliminate discrimination?

Laws been used to eliminate discrimination by creating laws that are against discrimination. Some of these laws are of a nature as to make it illegal to refuse housing to people based on race and other factors. Still other laws guarantee equal pay. Many of these laws prohibit not only discrimination based on race, but gender, age, religious affiliation and other factors.
