from the Latin: Germanus, first attested in writings of Julius Caesar, who used Germani to designate a group of tribes in northeastern Gaul. Some of the other tribes were Alemanni, Alsatian, Teutons, Saxons, etc. which are also used to refer to Deutschlanders.
We do that with some other countries: Greek=Hellas, Ireland=Eire, Hungary=Magyar
