How do I prevent an awkward relationship?

My girlfriend and I have a great relationship, but the only problem is the awkward silences the happen when we have nothing else to talk about. If you can, can you please make a list for me to prevent this. When I say make a list, I mean like what should I do. Ex. Lack of communication... Thank you for helping me.
