I sometimes do gift cards. Diapers can be a fantastic gift but sometimes mom may have a preference. I like to buy glass bottles when available, undershirts, booties/socks, thermometers, nail clippers, onesies, bibs, safety pins, and cloth diapers when available. I also like to give the book Goodnight Moon for a gift.

Diapers are great gifts! Having 3 boys myself I can tell you the clothes are cute the toys are fun and sometimes a headache but babies out grow clothes so fast and usually have so many clothes to start they don't wear them all, most baby toys go unplayed with for a while or even all together. Diapers are used every day and get expensive buying them. I was always thrilled to get diapers at my baby showers.

You could make a diaper cake. Include travel sized baby necessities like baby lotion, baby oil, baby power, baby brush and comb, Baby hand-size toys, 4oz baby bottles, use wash cloths to somehow assemble it to be decorative etc...You can basically do wonders with a diaper cake. If you're not sure on how to build your diaper cake. Go to youtube a look for one that you can connect to easily in following step by step in building one. Once you got that done you can get to the easy part of decorating with all the baby essentials. You could also bring a small gift bag along for the mommy with things that she may be great to have from after the delivery, for example: disposable breast pads, which will definitely come in handy and anything else that you can think of. :)

Most likely, Mom will be on a register; ask her. You could also go to Dollar Tree, buy a basket; decorate it with wash cloths and fill it with wipes, baby lotion, shampoo, diapers, pacifiers, baby spoons, coupons, etc. They even have the outside wrapping for it to make it look like a gift basket. If you don't want to do this, a gift card will be appreciated. Note: if you are buying clothes, buy 6 months to a year; not newborn. Newborn sizes are barely used!

Depending on the parents lifestyle, and if the parents are related old friends, or a co worker I will give a nice hand made coupon book redeemable anytime, for babysitting, doing laundry, making meals, etc, next choice is a baby book these can be found almost anyplace that has a baby department, along with the book, I get the silver plated, birth certificate holder, this usually comes with a couple other silver plated containers, maybe for first curl, or first lost baby tooth.
Next choice would be star from the star register while you can purchase this before baby is born, I usually wait until after the child is named as it can then be more personalized, in that case I will print the photo from the website wrap that along with instructions,
The next choice is a gift certificate from a freelance photographer, the baby is the main subject but, they do include the parents in a few shots for the first family portrait.
Last choice, which sadly was always the only choice, is a U S Savings Bond, with the economy being a bit unstable, I usually decide on something else, I know will last and more than likely be the a one of a kind gift
Hope this helps

As a mom I can tell you you never have enough onesies. They get stained quickly and need to be replaced. Diapers are great, too, but make sure the new parents want to use disposables rather than cloth. Unless the baby is a preemie, stay away from newborn size clothing. A lot of time even brand new babies are too big to wear them. And as adorable as those frilly little dresses and sailor suits are, get more practical clothing items.

As a parent of 2...the best gift is Diapers...you never have too many!!! If you worry they will have too many Newborn...skip to size 2 or 3...might not use them immediately...but they will get used! There were so many clothes that our children grew out of before the tags were off...toys that never made it out of the box. One thing that we didn't get...and could have been really nice...buy them a photo session at a local photography studio (Or Wal-Mart, Sears, or JC Penney's Studio). That is a gift that would give on forever! Just spend whatever you would like to...and once the parents take the baby...they will probably add to it! If the baby is due before Christmas, then it would be really cool because they can get baby's first Christmas photos which are super special and you would be remembered for giving the new family that gift!

Check to see where the parents-to-be are registered. In this economy the expensive necessities will be appreciated, get together with a couple of friends and get the car seat, crib and mattress, stroller or changing table, etc.. Diapers are great but check with the new mom to see if she wants cloth or disposable. There are great all-in-one cloth diapers available that last for years and many children. The cloth diapers do not need plastic covers and have snaps that let the diaper go from newborn to time to potty train. Be sure to get the ones that fasten with plastic snaps, the velcro will need to be replaced in a year or so and most people do not sew and the plastic snaps last and do not rust. Disposable diapers are bulky to store so I give a small box with gift cards so they can get the size they need when they need them. A gift card to the store they are registered so they can get stuff they did not get at the shower is nice. Please!! enclose the gift receipt in with the gift.

DIAPERS DIAPERS DIAPERS!!!! As a mother I have found that it doesn't take long to run out of diapers. Especially in the newborn and sizes 1-2 stage so I would get a couple packs from that variety. NOTE: allot of people will by NB size so go with 2's and 3's :) she will thank you later!

A play pin or a cradle for the most, if you're not looking to spend TOO much then like a eating chair for the baby or some toys.

I had a baby last year and we LOVE our Boppy! You can use it as a support when feeding the baby (works for either breast or bottle), it is great for tummy-time, and then it is great for the baby to practice sitting up with because it can go all the way around the baby's bottom. Also, plenty of diapers - I would say size 2 is perfect.

A forehead thermometer. You don't have to wake the child up to check for a fever. No one ever gives one of these so it will be a very useful and original gift. It will last throughout the whole childhood.

People forget about Onesies. Can NEVER have enough of those. Gift certificate to Toys R Us usually covers anything they didn't actually get.

I'm a mom of 3,and when I had a baby shower (for my 1st born;he's now 17)I got newborn clothes/diapers that NEVER fit him, given 2 me as gifts. My hubby & I were poor % struggling @ the time. What we wished we'd have gotten was a crib & matress/car seat/stroller/high chair/pack n play portable play pen.We were thankful for the kind thoghts that went n2 the gifts, but w/the economy now, young moms need all the helkp they can get, cash of small amounts adds up,and will help pay for the expensive stuff babies need. But,if ur wanna be diapers size 1 or size 2 is good (LUvs holds up best),Huggies Natural Care Baby wipes r great for babies with sensitive skin & get unscented 2 avoid rashes/Balmex diaper rash cream wpies off the easiest0Size 3 to 6 months baby cothes,up to 12 months due 2 the changes n seasons as the baby grows, works best.ALWAYS WRAP THE RECEIPTS when giving a gift,in case U get 2 much of a item (exsample 1 baby doesn't need 2 cribs etc)

Diaper will be the best option for the mother's gift in the baby shower program. The other baby gifts can also be embedded in the with the diaper cake. These baby shower party comes very less and if the mother is going to deliver a baby for the first time then a diaper cake with a good theme is a credit whereas if she has two or three children then it is better to have a good baby dress as a gift. There may be available of these dresses in the family but it is good to gift the diaper and the dresses itself.Refer link
