How much would it cost to build a school in a developing country?

Like Oprah built a school in Africa, but I'm wondering if it would be possible for an average person to fund a school or help build one and how much it would cost :)

There are quite a few factors to consider. You need the proper permits and and approvals for what ever country you want to build it in.Then there is property and construction costs. Once it is built you have the costs of funding the operations. you would have to pay an administrator if you aren't going to be it, plus teachers. Are you going to house the students or are they going to be going home each night? Are you going to feed them while they are there or are they expected to bring food? If you are planning on feeding them at least once a day you will need to build a kitchen of some sort and someone to cook.

So as you can see there are a lot of variables to consider and it will most like cost over $1 million just to get going. if you don't have that kind of money you can look for others to build it with you or look for organizations that are building schools and donate time and money to them.

well, in order to build a school from scratch, that would probably cost thousands of dollars for the bricks, stuff to hold the bricks together, books, writing utensils, lunch, wall paint, tile or carpet... yeah, a lot

In Cambodia they needed 50,000 dollars, at a recent fundraiser. Teachers there make a pittance.

That's unfortunate. Is the cost of living at least reasonable in comparison?

No, from what I gather teachers can't afford to buy a six pack of Hennikon (their favorite) after expenses.

I have seen schools in the poorest areas of South America where they only needed a teacher. They had chalk and slate. They met outdoors or in someones barn. They wanted to learn. They did not care if they had a uniform or building. They were hungary for a simple education. The basic cost was supporting a local teacher with a simple salary of $4500 per year.
