I have them, and they don't really hurt. They hurt for the first day, maybe 2 days. But its just a really tight feeling, no big problem. You should BRUSH your teeth everyday (2 times) and rinse occasionally. Food does get stuck in there, a lot!! So just be careful. I had a slight case of gingivitis because i was not brushing well enough. Your gums can get really inflamed and red, if you don't take care of your braces. Bacteria also is more common with braces.
You can eat and drink anything you want. I eat and drink anything, you just need to brush your teeth afterwards. Like all foods. Sometimes if you eat something frozen, or really hard, you can break some stuff, so just be careful. And when you go to an orthodontic appointment they repair it, and put new colors and wires on anyway, so don't be so cautious that you can't have any freedom.
Mine didn't really hurt. Just a tight feeling and a little soreness for a couple days. But the worst part is just getting used to them being in your mouth and making sores. They tell you that you can't eat certain things but as long as you are careful you should be fine.
