How do you remove the vocal track from a song?

I was thinking about having a Karaoke party sometime but there are a few songs that I think would go over well that are far too obscure to be on any Karaoke CD or available for download. If I own the mp3 file and some audio editing software is there a way to make a file without the vocal track?

*Usually* you have a left a right and a center track the vocal track is often laid into the center track so removing the center track should remove the main vocals (sometimes backup vocals are recorded over the left or right music track or both so it can be harder to remove those) but it also will depend on what editing software you get (and I am WAY behind the times on this as I haven't edited sound files in yrs so IDK what to tell you to get) Okay a DJ friend tells me that a program called Switch Sound File Converter can do this for you and you can get a 30 day free trial :)
