I don't think the schools are teaching enough grammar nowadays. Grammar and Punctuations has lost its important and people don't care about it because they think they have a valid reason to spoil the grammar. They call it as 'Regional slang'. They name their english as their own style. And English too is a flexible language.
I feel the same way. A lot of kids use this site and sometimes they use street talk like wat for the word what. I know the kids know better. I just wish they'd show how smart they really are by writing the best way possible.
Mornin Helix! You just opened a can o worms on this one for me!! 8D The schools don't want to "hold back" students for not passing classes, such as English, because it make sthem look like theyre not doing a good job teaching! (which in many cases, theyre not!). Schools must meet criteria to receive funding, and would rather pass failing students to maintain a false sense of "achievement" amongst themselves, rather than actually making sure students are competent in a class before passing them to the next grade! I've had a personal experience with this myself!! Oldest daughter failed 6th grade math. Came home with a "C" on report card! I immediately contacted the school, & was finally told a few days later, that NOBODY IN THAT MATH CLASS PASSED, so they graded them on a CURVE!!! And EVERY CHILD moved to the next grade. Pitiful!! When we ASKED that our child be held back, they REFUSED!! I didn't even know what the hell a "curve" was until I was in college!! (at least not that kind of "curve"!!!)
in school i notice a lot of my classmates even talk wrongly. i am not one to judge that though, because English is not my first language, so i don't speak it correctly either. just the other day, i got a point taken off (5 points total, i got 4) from a test because i wrote my grammar wrong. and i remember re-reading it just to make sure it was correct. so, i guess i speak cavemen English also.
but i do try to speak it as correctly as possible.
if i ever do spell things wrongs its because i have a small case of dyslexia i get my letters back words some times but i know what you mean tho. for example: mine craft blue 500.. lol what are you asking??? they don't even but a question mark haha whats up with that ( by the way i tried really hard to use good grammar lol )
no, not really. its just the books we read i guess. as far as im concerned, if your grammar and your "txt talk" is so horrible that i cant understand what youre saying, as in it sounds like a foreign language to me, then thats when you have to do something. but in my opinion as long as i understand what youre saying, then i dont have a problem. i mean ive found that to be the same with editing a novel. i dont care if some of the advanced grammar rules are wrong, i really dont. as long as im reading it and i can understand what im reading then im fine. thats my view on it. thats why i never capitalize, unless if i have something to put in emphasis.
Schools arent necessarily teaching it. In large part it is caused by text speak and short talk like on twitter. Plus schools are required to specifically teach materials required to pass grade level national board achievement tests so they have much less time to teach things like essay writing and critical thinking.
They aren't- the kids are just lazy. We all have opportunities to learn, but instead a lot of us choose to focus on stupid things like swag yolo crap.. Blame the kids, (if not, their parents) not the schools.
