What's a good present for a father?

My father's birthdate/birthday is close, I wanna get a present for him! I don't have so much money, (not a lot) but I wanna get him the perfect gift, because I believe he deserves it. I don't want to but him a cruddy b-day card, but I can't afford a big gift, what should I give him! His birthday is tomorrow! Please help! And thanks in advance.

Give him yourself for the weekend or make him dinner and then take him out to a movie. Just give him you and your time. I am 60, a father of 4. Time is the most precious thing.

Get him a small giftcard to his favorite store? Some giftcards like Starbucks or Itunes come in $15 increments. You could also take him to a movie (go to a matinee if you are worried about cost).

A watch that's from a son is a special watch. I saw one a Costco. For a hundred bucks.

What is your price limit? What hobbies does your dad have, could buy something off one of his hobbies, does he have a fave sporting team , if so you could buy some sports memorabilia for him.

20.00 dollars, I tried to save up, but I came short. :/
Report as
Oh, and thanks! :)

Can get lots of cool sports team stuff with 20.00, hit up a store and see if anything catches your eye. You know it isn't the amt you paid for the gift.. it is the love you have for that person that made you want to get them a gift and the thought you put into it.

The thought always counts! :)

The most popular gift for Dadt—is a Father's Day card.

Actually, I didn't want that at all. You see, I can't spend much time with my dad, even though I wish I could. Buying him a card? I did that last year..
but thanks anyway!

Research suggests that the things people remember after long periods of time are experiences rather than material possessions, so perhaps you can engage in a fun activity with your dad. Maybe it could be something you both like to do!

Well, that's the problem, I can't spend time with my dad, I'm really busy, and I have to work at least 5 hours after school to help them pay bills, then I do my homework, sleep, and it starts all over. But your suggestion looks helpful. I'll ask the boss to let me go :) Thanks!
Report as
Well, if you can swing it, that might make spending time with your dad even more special, considering your busy schedule. I hope it works out.

If he wears ties to work...a tie is a popular gift...but not very practical if he doesn't wear a tie regularly. If he works physically (meaning a laborer) for a living, then a massage...neck and shoulders, or feet....done by you as a thank you for his hard work :) Alternatively a new tool, or gift card to Home Depot, Sears, or Lowes! And a home made coupon for a day's labor from you, no questions asked to be his personal assistant for some project around the house. He may never cash it in....but it will mean a lot that you cared enough to offer. :)

Dads like simple. Do something that shows how much you love him but that he likes. Watch his favorite movie with him, or take him out to his favorite restaurant. If he likes sports, maybe find something to do with that. Don't over think it. Maybe just wash the car for him or something, he would love it if you got a tedious chore done for him!

I think the first answer you received was the best. I have four grown children (youngest is still at home) and I always appreciate time with them. My oldest daughter recently signed me up for a scrapbooking class in which I had no interest but it is her hobby, She wanted me to go so we could do some activity together. I actually enjoyed the class. I have been a senior technology manager for IBM for over 17 years and my prior background throughout my career has been in IT. I never could see myself croping pictures, putting them in albums with decorations, comments, etc. I am working on an album where my three daughters put together several collages of his 50th surprize birthday party. I removed them and have a wonderful album with wonderful memories and a story book where we can see the children's father (my husband) from his baby years until the present. Now the class has ended and we get together and work on our projects together. It is wonderful!!!

I think it depends on what personality or character your father has. While, for example, a precious watch can make someone feel excited, at the same time it could be quite useless for another one. For me, I'm quite sure that anything I buy for my father makes him appreciated as I guess it's the nature of my work that makes his world better than the thing itself.
