How do I get rid of pain from wearing a wire retainer?

I just got my retainer 2 days ago and I'm supposed to be wearing it all the time except when eating. However, I can't go through half an hour without feeling pain! What should I do?

There are wax products that dentist recommends to people who wear braces and retainers. This special type of wax for teeth helps in lessening the friction that may occur between your retainer wire and mouth.

Otherwise
Avoid eating hard foods
Get some medicine
Gargle with cold water
Gargle with warm salt water
Brush your teeth and clean your retainer

It is normal that you may feel pain from retainer for about a week or two. But if the pain worsens each day and you start to feel ill, then you should go to the dentist.

My rubber bands on my braces hurt that much sometimes but really, other than painkillers theres almost nothing you can do about it. Wearing a retainer will get more normal soon. Its just because you got it a few days ago.

You can get rid of this pain by gargling warm salty water and prevent bacterial infection by regularly cleaning your teeth and your retainer. Ask a dentist to recommend a special type of wax which reduces the friction between your retainer wire and your mouth.

Orajel helps. But don't worry the pain wont last for long. Your teeth and gum will eventually get use to it.
